HM Bomb Vessel Granado by jwvolz - FINISHED - Caldercraft - 1:64

Joe,

I've just spent a most enjoyable hour or so reading through your log. You're doing an excellent job on her and I particularly enjoyed reading your techniques and tips on painting. Thanks for sharing so much.

Thank you Grant, I'm glad you enjoyed the read.

The channels were built from boxwood, to replace the kit walnut version, and glued and pinned to the hull. I still need to fabricate and install the support knees.

I also installed the pumps, which were completed awhile ago, as well as the quarterdeck barricade. I don't think I took any photos of when I installed the entry steps and fenders not long ago, which are also boxwood replacements of the kit walnut.

Finally, I've installed the rudder and tiller and housing. I added the trim along the bottom of the housing on my own to give it a ore finished look. Caldercraft would have you make the tiller from a bent piece of brass. I didn't really think it would have been a metal part on the real Granado, and the AOTS book is unclear, so I carved one up from boxwood. Even if I'm wrong, I think it looks better...

Thanks Wayne.

As a fellow Granando builder, any thoughts on my tiller decision to go with the wood instead of brass?

I prefer the metal as it follows the AOTS but the wooden version doesn't look out of place at all and you've executed it well.

I'm hoping to step the masts on my Granado this weekend in a vain attempt to stay ahead of you.

I think the one in AOTS was metal in order to withstand handling as the model could be taken apart (necessitating removal of the tiller). Realistically, I believe it is more correct in wood.

  • 1 month later...

I know it has been awhile since the last update, but I am making very good progress on Granado. The hull is complete aside from port lids and other delicate items that I am going to hold off installing for now. I have begin work on the masts and that is going well. I have some days off coming for the holidays so I'll catch up on the pictures soon.

In the meantime, everyone have a Merry Christmas and best wishes for a great 2015!

A bit more of an update.

As I mentioned above the hull is finished except for a few fragile items I'm leaving off until the rigging is complete. These photos show the completed tiller assembly, channels/chainplates, fish davit, entry stairs. I think that's it...

I've also completed the anchors, which took a good bit of filing, sanding, and puttying to get smooth. They still need puddening.

Finally the bowsprit is complete, but not yet fixed in place. Work continues on the remaining masts.

The masts and bowsprit are rigged with the appropriate fitting and have been stepped. I replaced a number of the pre-cut kit walnut mast fittings with boxwood, most notably the main mast cheeks. There was no way I was going to get colors to match up otherwise, with the lighter wood for the masts themselves.  I've also wrapped up a few things on deck including running the anchor cables and the messenger and nippers. I also finally made the rope coils for the cannons; I've been putting that task off for awhile...

On another note, I've begun the task of tearing out my defunct N scale model railroad. This will free up a nice chunk of space in my hobby room, and I plan to re-do my whole work area setup with new tables and more work space. Stray tuned.

What will be a particularly nice part of the new work area is the excellent lighting I had over the layout.

Great work Joe. Calling you a fast builder - which you are - would undermine the extremely high quality and accuracy of what you do. Great to watch and with all that extra space we, who are snail paced, will be afraid...very afraid :P ...

Cheers

Thanks Alistair and the "likes".

I appreciate the kind words. I'm really looking forward to laying out the new work area and making it at as user-friendly as possible. I've gotten some nice ideas from the thread about other's workbenches.

Enjoy your time away!

More top work Joe, she looks great with all the deck fittings and the boxwood looks so crisp. You should be very proud.

Given you've done anchors and fish davit etc that I've left till last I think you've passed me now.

I've just finished rigging the yards and will post a pic but I look forward to following happily in your wake now.

  • 3 weeks later...

OK, bit of an update, but not really on Granado itself. I've pretty much completed my renovation of my hobby room, which has kept me from working on the model for a few weeks. I have new tables and a great storage cabinet that made it so easy to organize all my tools, paints, supplies etc... I have significantly more room now. Everything is from Ikea; I just love their stuff and they have so many great cabinets like the one I bought.

As I mentioned above, this is the area where my N scale train layout was located, and it has nice overhead lighting. The only issue was the bulbs in the fixtures were halogen, and I was absolutely baking under them. I bought LED replacements for big $, but there is now zero heat coming off the lights, and the bulbs should last longer than me...

Still a few things left to finish up, and I need to reserve a space in there for my Domanoff serving machine that is on its way. When that arrives I can get to work on starting the rigging.

Great workspace Joe.  I am definitely going to be visiting Ikea to add furniture to my workshop at some point in the not terribly distant future.  They really do have some stuff that is great for outfitting work areas, at quite reasonable prices in comparison to 'real' workbenches from wood working stores.

It's also nice that they have almost everything available in many different finishes so you can match things to your work area if you want.

Hey Joe I had trouble putting my tower together. My screws didn't work. Did you have trouble with yours?

Nice looking space.

Thanks guys.

I wasn't 100% sure on going with those white tabletops Brian, but my wife talked me into it, since they're brighter, easier to see what I'm doing. If they get messed up with spills and stains in a few years I won't beat myself up about replacing them because they aren't very expensive.

Jim,

It took a little time, since there are so many drawers, but no issues with assembly, and there were the proper quantity and type of screws and such.

Did you take it up with Ikea? They're usually very good about those kind of things.

That's a nice really space Joe.  A beer fridge, speakers and a flat screen TV and you'll have the perfect man cave.
