HMS Alert 1777 by Jaekon Lee - 1/64
dgbot replied to Jaekon Lee's topic in - Build logs for subjects built 1751 - 1800
Expensive but cheaper than a mill. Get some clot bags and put one per bag. Then a pouch of silion gel that you find in boxes to absorb the moisture and they can be safely stored until the next time or next week David B -

I picked up a plane like the bottom one awhile back I think it is called a shoulder plane. Nice for getting into the edge. But I found out that for a smooth cut make sure the blade is sharp and take a light cut the end result is amazing. I got mine from Ebay. David B -
Congratulations Jesse on a nice model and a enjoyable and learning log. You did wonders and taught several how to overcome some problems. Have you decided on another project? David B

Tips and Tricks for Airbrushing
dgbot replied to JPett's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
At a hands on demo I was having problems with my Paache. The demonstrator looked it over then eyeballed the needle and found that it had a slight bend. He said I must have dropped it. Be careful of the needle. If you are having problems eyeball it. As a result when I needed a new air brush I found a Badger 360 for a decent price and picked up some extra needles to be on the safe side. I was also told to use the correct needle/nozzle for the application. Plus keep a container of cleaner near by and spray it every now and then to prevent clogging. David B- 39 replies

Still too much rigging. I have an allergy to rigging. Years ago I fully rigged a Cutty Sark and did not feel to well afterward. Since then the less I have to do the better I feel. David B

Looking good man. Have you tried changing the kind of lighting you are using? This will change the shade of the coloring quite a bit. David B

Has anyone got or used headband magnifiers?
dgbot replied to vossy's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Without my glasses I am blind as a bat. Half the work I do is with some magnifiers. David B -

It looks like you are going to have it running with the wind. This should be interesting when you decide how to set the sails. I remember reading an article about the Sea Witch. The crew was terrified because the Cap't ordered all the canvas spread in a gale and the crew was afraid it would be swamped. The Cap't was a pusher. Is this how you are going to display it when finished? David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
