Fantastic work Hank. You are fortunate to have access to knowledgeable resources to hep you with your build. With so much information out there you would think Trumpeter would go to the trouble of making the kit more accurate instead of what they had at the time. Not everyone has access or the no how to find useful info. David B

Is there a better #11 blade handle
dgbot replied to roach101761's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
When I am scoring metal or working on a tough piece I will use an exacto blade but for fine cutting I use the scalpel blade. Both have a place depending on what you are doing. David B -
Your eyes are sharp and your hands are steady. I would love to see that beauty up close. A fantastic piece of workmanship. David B

Is there a better #11 blade handle
dgbot replied to roach101761's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I use a handle I found in a hobby shop years ago. It tightens from the back and is rubber with a hexagonal shape at the end so it does not roll around. As a result of being tightened in the back the blade is secure and will not loosen up. David B -

A professional boat builder could not have done better. David B -
Nice work. Hopefully you did not have any more problems. Your hand must have been sore when you were done. Being that steady with a live bit is not fun. David B

Daniel weathering her would take a long time and would have to be subtle. Hard use and neglect is hard to duplicate without going overboard. I think it would take about a year or two to do a proper job. I have always been a fan of it but lack the skills to do a good job without going overboard. David B

I bought a pack of #11 scalpel blades from Amazon. The cost for a pack of 100 was not that much $10 and they are sharp right out of the box. But they are also more flexible and they will not take the beating an exacto will. but for my work they are perfect. After a few swipes on the cutting board a couple of strokes on a leather strop with compound they last for a long time. David B -

Not bad but you should put some black on them before you go much further. As they are they do not match the shrouds. Ratlines were heavily tarred so that they would not rot. David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
