Oh and as far as the transom goes. I've decided not to add anything. The bottom of the bottle is not at all clear so anything I include would not be seen any ways.

I was hoping to get the last two sails done before I posted but with in laws in town I haven't found the time. They went home and I found enough time to post. Here's where she's at. I can't say she's the best ship I've ever done but I've learned a lot in the process so she's been worth it. Just got two more sails and she's ready to bottle.

At the very least you know with that much weight it would take a very heavy breeze to push her completely over. Also props to Jude to getting into the water to help out. That's very nice of her.

Beautiful work! What a great schooner to build too. The lines are incredible. Love the scale too. I look forward to seeing more.

Might be a good idea to look into resin or some other type of casting and use the lead parts to make the mold. At least that way you could avoid the corrosion.

Theres some great caves in the Rushmore area. Some you can take an elevator down into. It's pretty cool maybe worth a look.

HALF MOON by jct - FINISHED - Corel
DSiemens replied to jct's topic in - Kit build logs for subjects built from 1501 - 1750
J you've been so kind in looking through my logs I thought I'd have a look at your work. I'm very glad I did your ship is very nice. Your hard is is paying off and she's coming along beautifully. -
Finally got a little more done on the QAR. She's really close I hope to have her done soon. Just a few more spars and sails then I got to prep the bottle and put her in. I've chosen to have the main sails furled. Partly because its a little easier, shows the deck better, and is a standard battle position which is fitting for this ship. Also I had posted a little sloop I did for a kid that was researching pirate ships. Since I had so much fun with it and I gave the other one away I had to do another. I should do a full log on these because they really are so quick and simple. It would be a great build fo some one who wants to get into the real miniature building.

Great work. I'm curious. What are you using to water proof the hull? I have been toying with the idea of making an rc model for a long time and that's one thing I've often wounded about.

Well done Danny! She looks great. It also has to be a record for one of the fastest HMS Victory builds.

Thanks J. Yea bending masts are one way of doing it. There's so many methods out there. Which is one thing I love about this craft. Your right about fitting a lot of ships in small spaces. I keep three on a shelf in my office and eight on a shelf in my living room. There's actually a couple of members of my local club that have started bottling ships partly because they have ran out of space for bigger models.

Very impressive clay work! That is a method I have not seen before. I agree that balsa is to soft to carve. I built one ship out of balsa and a lot of wood filler. It turned out well but the process was tough and I vowed never to do it again. Out of curiosity have you tried bass wood or cherry?

Jan's comment is well educated and a good point to follow in your future models. The model is yours though build it how you like and to the best of your knowledge and pleasure. If it's what you like leave it. Aesthetically I'd leave the spacer off. Just my own opinion. I've never seen one on a caravel myself. It's very good that your thinking outside the box and including parts that aren't part of the original kit. It makes it yours and that much more fun.

how to paint like this?
DSiemens replied to luesey's topic in Painting, finishing and weathering products and techniques
Luesey, The photo you posted is very inspiring. I don't know that I'm much help as all I have ever used is a fine brush and a steady hand. What I wanted to point out though is to be careful about buying Black Pearl Kits. As far as I know there isn't an officially licensed one. I could be wrong on that. I would check out this post Banned Kits The Black Pearl is one of the most copied models by companies that do not respect copy rights. Many of the kits are banned on this forum for that reason. Before you buy a kit read the post and make sure it's not among them. I'd hate to see you get into a model you like and not be able to share the experience and ask questions because the company you bought it from is cheating people. -
The Jolly Roger has always been one of my favorites. It was actually the first model ship I built myself as a teenager. Mine was a Lindberg kit. I still have it though it's in bad disrepair and needs restoration. Another project on the list. I look forward to seeing what you create. Scratch building is tricky but is so much more fun in my opinion. Nothing like creating something that is yours and one of a kind.

Thanks Kat. If you like the QAR you really should see the other Dan's version. It's incredible and follows closely to researched history of the ship. http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/3741-queen-annes-revenge-by-shipmodel-1710-136-scale/
