F-86F-30 Sabre by Javlin - FINISHED - Kinetic - 1/32

Very nice! -
Rest your wrist and hand on a sponge and use a 000 brush. I bought the Qualrite set of detail brushes (note: these are artist’s brushes and not model brushes) off of Amazon and they have worked amazingly well for miniatures. The 000 brush works great for insignia at 28mm scale. The sponge soaks up the vibration from your wrist. Given the choice, I would prefer to put my wrist down on something solid to ground it out, but with where you’re trying to work, the sponge would inflict less damage.

finding a R/C Napoleonic warship kit?
GrandpaPhil replied to Ian B's topic in RC Kits & Scratch building
I’m not aware of any Napoleonic R/C kits out there, but you should check out Jerry Todd’s R/C builds. He has built the Constitution, Pride of Baltimore, Constellation and Macedonian as R/C models. There is also a book called “Building a Working Model Warship: HMS Warrior 1860” by William Mowll that talks about his R/C Warrior. I actually just ordered that book after reading Jerry’s build logs here. -

There’s a discussion going on, on another build here which is discussing using a 45 degree planking technique to make a lightweight, but very rigid hull, especially after 3 layers. I may have to try that planking technique for the inner hull because most of this model is going to be covered in either wood grain contact paper, “armor” plates or copper tape anyway.

Your educated guesses have been really good up to this point! I would trust them any day!

Very nice technique! I’m going to have to try the 45 degree planking trick! I cut everything out with a scalpel.

I’m just using card. For your windows, I would do them in two pieces from cardstock. One outer frame and then make an inner frame to get the same effect as 3d printing them.

It’s the same thing I did here. That’s a binnacle at 1:98 scale. I used layered card for the impression of detail.

Questions Before I Buy My First Ship
GrandpaPhil replied to Magarkus's topic in New member Introductions
I would personally recommend Vanguard Models’s Cutter HMS Alert or one of their fishing boats for a good starter kit. The gentleman who owns the company and designs the kits, Chris Watton, is a member of this forum. His kits are top notch. The instructions are phenomenal.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
