Sam, You may question, as long as I am certain about, it it doesn't matter. Since you have found the path less travelled by - as usual - I am hard put to advise ... I would advise you -still - to follow the normal rigging steps, and not look for short cuts, which will eventually be a detour ... Looking rather nice that bowsprit!!! Cheers mate

Clever tool extension, Ed. The strength in repetitive actions is seen in the final result. Making deadeyes or doing e.g. Iaido kata, in the end it is all focused on reaching perfection, and so far you have been on top of it. Cheers

Hello Clare, The hairspray is used to avoid smudging a drawing, it's not expected to give it a life long protection ... Fixatives in paint are often used to make paint stick tbetter to the object it's used on ... I would choose the matt spray if I'm honest durable and rigid compared to hairspray... or use the fixative with a matt varnish, though I would also advise you to try it out on something a like ... Sometimes the time spent at the art academy isn't to bad ... ;-) Cheers, Carl

The gold looks like a metallic lacquer to me, but that will certainly be the photograph. The other colour ... I would expect some white-ish streaks in it ... with reference to the name

Clare, We used hairspray to fixate charcoal, and pastel crayon drawings from smudging, so I would presume (dangerous word) it would stay a lot longer than a short period. The flat lacker could do the same, since it is 3D, I would hold a sheet of paper behind it to avoid spaying to much ... Cheers Carl

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
