  1. If you buy a Weller soldering iron like the one shown on the opening picture of the first video, you dial in the heat (wattage) you need. No changing of heads, no open flame, no tarnish of metal that needs to be cleaned. On the other hand if you like playing with fire that's your choice. For soft solder I’ll use an iron every time. Bob
  2. I do the same thing for bending. Soak a paper towel and wrap it around the wood and heat. It’s that simple. Bob
  3. Thanks for passing on the website. It a good breakdown of the Americas Cup boats and the chalengers. Bob
  4. Thanks for the tutorial. Very good even for an old solderer like me. Bob
  5. I prefer an iron and soft solder unless strength is required then I use a torch for silver solder. Bob
  6. Three part before it’s right? I’d hate to tell you how many parts I threw away. But, Michael, it’s not how many parts you make but the way you make them. It is the rounding of the top surface on the head instead of leaving the edges sharp and looking at the mounting holes on that last block and the way you shape around them. Many would have cut straight across like the edge touching the paper. It is that sort of shaping and detailing that make you a master modeler in metal and in wood. Bob
  7. I’m close to that myself. After I gave the dragon to my brother the admiral said, ”That was my favorite.” Sometimes you just can’t win. Bob
  8. Now it is beginning to look like a boat and a beautiful boat at that. Thanks for the pictures. Bob
  9. ‘A real "who done it" mystery’ boat? Don’t give him any ideas, Kieth. He has enough already. Bob
  10. They're coming along nicely. Still don't know what you are going to do, but if I knew it won't be fun. Bob
  11. It’s not your splashing you have to worry about. We used to run our boats in an indoor swimming pool in the winter. There were still plenty of waves. Bob
  12. What I do is to chuck the drill shorter so only 3-5mm is sticking out of the chuck. The short drill exposed is much stiffer and does not walk as much. Bob
  13. I know it is 1:8 scale but I didn’t expect it to be so small. Fine work. The guys on the model engine forum are very helpful. Bob
  14. I would have made the bulkheads smaller and bent the ribs on the outside of the ribbands. I don’t know how to plank with the ribs on the inside. I’ll have to watch and learn. I do that a lot. Bob
