Now you've got me wondering out loud. This is something I never thought of. On my Syren, there are 2 piece lids. The upper is called a 'bolster' and is generally left off and stowed below (except in heavy weather). The lower lids have 2 rings on the inside, one on each side of the gun cutout. I suppose these could be closed with a hook from either side of the gun. There are a couple of (not so great) photos of this on my Syren log: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/46-us-brig-syren-by-augie-ms-kit-164-completed/page-3 Someone like Blue Ensign would probably have the definitive answer (and reference).

I believe your tapering from the 4th frame to the 1/2 width at the bow should work out just fine. Fantastic work at this scale.

Would not the tabs on the hinges, embedded in slots in the planking, be sufficient for holding on the lids? Just wondering about the need to remove the varnish.

Lots of everything right now! And yes, I recall 'encouraging' you on the cabin floor. Turnabout is fair play.

Sorry about the bending frustration. Sometimes, bending it halfway then a complete drying then bending further can work. You might also try adding 10-15% household ammonia to your soaking bath. Yes, it smells like the dickens. Or, you can try another wood. Step away from it for a minute and regroup!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
