I think we're all in the same boat. I went through enough 74's on the last project and hope to have enough 'in stock' to get through the current project.

I have no clue on how you will cut the gun ports. But I'm sure you do!

I wholeheartedly agree on staining/poly. But a VERY light stain. Chuck (and I) generally dilute golden oak (minwax) down to about 20-30% using 70-80% natural stain as the diluent. Since it's basswood, I'd highly recommend a pre-stain to prevent any dark blotches. And as John suggests, try on some scrap first. In this case use something roughly carved to see how it penetrates the carving lines. It's beautiful......don't cover it up.

That's a single flue harpoon Salty has modeled there. Knowing you, John, you might want to go with the double flue design (even though actually less effective). Some nice photos in this link: http://www.harpoons.us/

John- I try and use that 20-30 foot rule religiously except between gun ports and the like. I find I need to angle the seams somewhat to conform to the bulkhead lines on a POB. But all in all, it makes planking easier ...... I think .

JP had the user name a little scrambled. Don't know if it helps but I had a harpoon and a lance I bought up at Mystic some 40, aye 40-odd years ago. As I recall, the wooden handle was hexagonal in shape, maybe 3 1/2" across the flats and the entire harpoon about 7' long.

With regards to using CA for planking, the problem of penetration can be controlled by using the heavier, thick grade. It takes longer to set (perhaps 20 seconds) but because of the viscosity it does not penetrate the wood quickly. It can also be controlled nicely to apply the smallest of dabs and doesn't 'get all over the place'. I'm not talking about the 'gel', just the thick grade. It's strong. But like all CA's, it doesn't like to be sanded.

Thanks Adrieke. I'll just wait to hear from Mark. Have spent way too much time on this machine this week and when that IE 11 came in I just stuck it in without thinking. I'm sure you're correct. Coming from the paper and pencil era, I live in deadly fear of these electronic 'improvements'. Every time one comes up it seems I've got to disable it......and that's when smoke starts coming out of my machine. So this is progress?????

Nice work Bob. Are those 1/8" wide planks on the lower hull?

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
