  1. I think we're all in the same boat. I went through enough 74's on the last project and hope to have enough 'in stock' to get through the current project.
  2. I wholeheartedly agree on staining/poly. But a VERY light stain. Chuck (and I) generally dilute golden oak (minwax) down to about 20-30% using 70-80% natural stain as the diluent. Since it's basswood, I'd highly recommend a pre-stain to prevent any dark blotches. And as John suggests, try on some scrap first. In this case use something roughly carved to see how it penetrates the carving lines. It's beautiful......don't cover it up.
  3. That's a single flue harpoon Salty has modeled there. Knowing you, John, you might want to go with the double flue design (even though actually less effective). Some nice photos in this link: http://www.harpoons.us/
  4. John- I try and use that 20-30 foot rule religiously except between gun ports and the like. I find I need to angle the seams somewhat to conform to the bulkhead lines on a POB. But all in all, it makes planking easier ...... I think .
  5. JP had the user name a little scrambled. Don't know if it helps but I had a harpoon and a lance I bought up at Mystic some 40, aye 40-odd years ago. As I recall, the wooden handle was hexagonal in shape, maybe 3 1/2" across the flats and the entire harpoon about 7' long.
  6. It's SaltySeaDog: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php?/topic/839-cw-morgan-whaleboat-by-salty-sea-dog-al-scale-125-wood-pof-first-wooden-boat-build-small/#entry11863
  7. Really fine work there my friend. She's coming close to the finish line.
  8. Very nice. I rather like that color choice above the wales and we get to see it nicely now. Don't sweat the rake angle on the mizzen......if it matches the plans, it's fine! WELL DONE!
  9. Whoops, my bad on posting that address. No problem. You can contact Jimbob right through MSW and he can then email you privately. Just go to his profile and send him a message. I've spoken with him and he'll field your inquiries that way. Sorry Richard.......and ANJA!
  10. With regards to using CA for planking, the problem of penetration can be controlled by using the heavier, thick grade. It takes longer to set (perhaps 20 seconds) but because of the viscosity it does not penetrate the wood quickly. It can also be controlled nicely to apply the smallest of dabs and doesn't 'get all over the place'. I'm not talking about the 'gel', just the thick grade. It's strong. But like all CA's, it doesn't like to be sanded.
  11. For those who might be interested, the latest update of this log, professionally assembled, is now available from Richard (Jimbob). If you would like to see a copy, email him at email removed by moderator to prevent spamming. He can truly work some magic putting these together.
  12. Yup - 110% with Alistair. Get in the garboard and shorten it back at the front end to give other planks more room.
  13. Adieke- Figured out how to get back to IE 10 based on your instructions. It worked! I can post photos again. And my machine didn't self destruct. Can't thank you enough. MARK- Thanks for helping out. All is well.
  14. She is very sharp, isn't she? Not at all like our bluff bows. Best wishes for recovery from here as well Mick.
  15. Thanks Adrieke. I'll just wait to hear from Mark. Have spent way too much time on this machine this week and when that IE 11 came in I just stuck it in without thinking. I'm sure you're correct. Coming from the paper and pencil era, I live in deadly fear of these electronic 'improvements'. Every time one comes up it seems I've got to disable it......and that's when smoke starts coming out of my machine. So this is progress?????
  16. Just saw this log Richard. That is one interesting subject you've chosen. Very sorry to hear of your problems. But rest assured that I applaud you efforts to improve her from the original version. You're a better man than I.
  17. Holy smokes Popeye. You didn't say a word. Talk about a 'shakedown cruise'. Glad to hear she's back to normal.
