  1. Well, a silver lining of this pandemic is that I have to telework from home, which means that I'm getting around 2 hours of driving time "back" every single day, as well as uninterrupted lunches which can be used for modeling. One of my buddies is a permanent teleworker; I knew he had it pretty good, but man the time savings are incredible. More of this little guy. I spent an immense amount of time shaping the little internal ribs, which should not have been done. The seats and eventual oars will make them almost impossible to see. I can’t even figure out a way to properly photograph them. Lol. I guess I’ll just chalk that up to carving/shaping practice. At any rate, the bench supports, benches and railing were shaped from small remnants of wood from the kit. Maybe a racing boat instead? I decided it would be easier to install the “wales?” as thick pieces, opting to shape the internal sides of them and then sanding the outsides when the glue had dried. Now they look a little better. They were made from the same black walnut as the rest of the main ship. It will be fun to see what it looks like after the oil is applied. The oarlocks just need a little more work to ensure they are all uniform, and then I’ll drill the little holes into the top centers of them. These things are tiny! The boat is around 3 cm in length.
  2. I'd love to see you build USS Idaho and/or USS Boise. They would be very unique! Alan
  3. A little warpage in the parts makes the project more interesting anyway. 😄 Alan
  4. If it were me, I'd do anything I could to eliminate the twist in the bulkhead former before proceeding, or it will cause substantive headaches later in the build. Alan
  5. Ordered and received! It's now shedding COVID in the garage. I can't wait to microwave it and then read! Alan
  6. I also wanted to thank you for creating this log. I've never been satisfied with the finish on my basswood Syren, and your log has been a gold mine of great information. Your model looks sensational! Alan
  7. I don't think it rubbed off at all, Bob. Although, if the nails stayed in the bag for a longer duration and blackened up more, perhaps some of that might have come off? I'm not sure; it's an easy test to do however, provided you can find eggs which haven't been hoarded. lol Alan
  8. Yes. I've attached a photo showing my experiment with the egg method. As you can see, there was a variation in color. I think I should have left the nails in the bag with the egg a bit longer. In fact, they may all be going back in the bag, as I'm going to use them for my Nina instead of my Syren. Still debating that tho, as the Nina hull is very dark, and I kind of like the variation in color on these. I'm also going to take off the poorly done hinge straps below, resurface the overall finish of the sides and replace with more "darkened/blackened" copper straps at some point on my Syren. Alan
  9. If you guys want to stay away from chemicals, a number of overboiled eggs mashed up in a Ziploc bag with your parts also creates a pretty cool effect. Alan
  10. I'll second the recommendation on Citadel paints. I don't think they can be beat. I'm not a good painter, but the paint is so easy to use, the below came out pretty well. Alan
  11. The new hearing aids are now adjustable thru your phone. You can apparently adjust them while in restaurants to focus on sound coming from directly in front of you, so you can hear your admiral better. Alan
  12. The hull looks fantastic, Mark. That should make for a great planking surface! Alan
  13. Thanks Josh I found the music for free within Youtube for that one. I think I like the music better than the video I made. lol Alan
  14. Thanks Mike! It was a lot of fun to do a POB and not worrying whatsoever about aligning planks from side to side. Alan
  15. (I'm thinking of adding rigging as well since the masts are not glued in, and everything can be taken back out of the bottle fairly easily)... Alan
  16. So this build log will certainly be different. For years now, my Syren and Triton builds have been gathering cobwebs, and also my Nina, which I ironically undertook in order to have at least one fully complete model in my display case. When I was asked to create a ship in a bottle, it was with some hesitation that I undertook the project. I did it since it was to be an extremely small model out of card. How long could it take, right? 😏 I should have created a log here, but since the build would be so quick, it felt like a log would be a bit superficial so I decided to take video of the project instead. Now that the project is done, I'm thinking it would look far, far better with weathering. If I weather the model, I'll post pics as normal. Overall, this was really a fun little project. For those wondering, I should actually be able to make progress in the "normal" shipyard in a few months! Alan
  17. 14k!?!? Well.... If anyone would still like one of these, I'll go ahead and build one with this level of detail for only 10k. Alan
  18. It looks like the decal is already on, thus too late for Mark to apply gloss coat to the model before application. Should he remove the decal and redo? Alan
  19. This log was so much fun to watch, I didn't want it to end! Another outstanding model. Alan
