  1. First layer is started. I think I've things were they need to be though still not too sure about the last plank at the stern. I'm not too worried about the the plank going over the transom yet. But, it does look close the pictures in the manual.
  2. That's a triple win, Kevin. Wife is happy, you got to use the lathe, and do it on the new bench.
  3. You're probably right on the auto gyro, Lou as the Navy did do quite a bit of testing back in the day on them for observation. Reading up on the history of helicopters, it's possible it was a prototype or early production bird.
  4. Very well done. I'm not seeing the errors you've pointed out.... Would priming the brass before laying down the gold paint have helped? I test painted a chunk of brass with the same paint. So far, it seems to be staying put but it wasn't primed.
  5. The roses came out well. Good idea on doing something for the admiral. As for the "tempered glass" piece... If you can find out the dimensions, contact a local glass company. I wouldn't be surprised if they can cut one for you for less money.
  6. I don't think it's dumb... I'm just following along to see what happens. It is an interesting idea to have the outline of sails but no sails to block the view.
  7. I do agree. Practice, practice and practice some more. And your airbrush work is most excellent. Hard to believe you never used one until now.
  8. Hard to believe that model is as tiny as it is. Wonderful work, Chris.
  9. Thanks Brian. I've been following his build and others. I think I"ve got it sorted out and have started the first layer of planking. It'll be awhile before I really have anything to show.
  10. I think we'll hold to that. Looking very good. No one would ever know this model had been beaten up and needed rebuilding.
  11. Have you considered getting one with the larger table but not the CNC? Many places will sell the CNC as an upgrade to a non CNC machine.
  12. About all I can say is 'WOW". Your work on this model is beyond mere mortals.
  13. Wow... so much detail in that diorama. Incredible.
  14. Thanks B.E. James noted that they do stand proud which is good. And 0.4mm sounds about right. I realize at this scale, somethings are tiny. I do have a pile of "dark" Swiss pear that think will good for the planking below the wales and use the kit pieces above. Now to focus on getting the first layer of planking down.
  15. Thanks for all the info, EG. Very enlightening.
  16. Question, EG. Pardon my confusion here. I assume the IPA can only be used once? Or can you re-use it? I know.. never assume but....
  17. Instead of wire for something that tiny, would monofilament work?
  18. A bit of Googling says there were 48lb carronades in use in the time frame you're looking at. In a schooner it would seem likely that a carronade would be mounted in the bow rather than a long gun due to space for recoil and gun handling. Are there any details on the schooner as to it's size, etc.?
  19. At an auction? Who knows. I've been to auctions and sometimes the bids go up a dollar sometimes several hundred or more at a time. I've done that myself more than once even on Fleabay... just raise the bid by some odd amount. Scares off those not serious.
  20. Thanks B.E. So far, so good. And thanks for the likes. I'm just about ready to start the planking. Need to print out my planking fan and do some marking up of the hull. I've finished sanding and fairing though I think I may have to revisit the stern a bit. Photos to bring this log up to date are below. I do have a question which I've not been able to sort out. Do the wales stand proud of the planking? Should they? I've looked at everyone's build and can't tell from the photos posted. I've looked in the manual, the on line builds, and all the drawings and can't tell. I'm also asking this James' prototype log. It's just nagging at the back of my brain. I managed to get the bow pieces right the first time.... whoopie!!!!!
  21. I have a small (maybe) question. Do the wales stand proud of the rest of the planking?
  22. You might have a look here.... I realize they're in the US but.... might be worth a look. https://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/products.php?category=1963256893
