Greetings From Beaverton, Oregon
mtaylor replied to datadiscovery's topic in New member Introductions
Welcome to MSW, Pete from southern Oregon. I will encourage you to start a build log as it's a great way to meet other builders and get help. -
I would assume (probably a big mistake as we know what happens when assuming) that there would be stars and other "markers" on those planes so friendlies wouldn't mistake them for the bad guys. Your 3 pic down seems to be Catalinas with markings though not "all black". The 2nd one does have squadron markings with the roundel also.

Dave, Do introduce yourself in the new member intro area. Also, feel free to open a log on your Dallas. It's a great way to meet other builders and also to share your work.

Brass Blackening questions
mtaylor replied to stevenmh's topic in Metal Work, Soldering and Metal Fittings
Test first on some scrap brass if you have it. Possibly the thin CA may work using as little as possible. As for blackening... they could always be painted flat black. -
Good save on the fingerprint. As for taking a year... this isn't a race and like someone said about wine... all in it's own time;.

Beautiful work. Have an adult beverage, relax, be proud of the ship, and contemplate your next model. -
Hello Free and welcome to MSW. By all means, do open a build log. ANCRE does have some wonderful monographs.
-
They don't look "rubbish" from here Greg. They look pretty darn good. Even the decals look great.
-
I agree with with the others... tailor you bookshelf to your interests. Mine has some monographs (ANCRE for French ships and the TFFS) and a bunch of reference works for ships of the same period. Some are specific to a given country but all are in the same time frame. Some were bought just to read and learn how things were done in the past. One book to think about but there's much dissension among the ranks is Monfeld's Historic Ship Models. While it has errors, it's a pretty good starting point for research. I also have quite a few "history" type books just fill in gaps.

It looks to me that some of the drawings show what might be deck clamps such that a beam or beams could be laid then lay decking on top of them. From your research, your best guess is probably just as good (maybe better) than those that written books, etc. as you're looking at all sources equally.

A big part of the problem with the Wasa is that after she sank, the King had the guns salvage by smashing holes in the deck to get to them. This also destroyed much of the rigging/masts.
-
I decided to "size" the gunports and get the skin to match the port before going any further. Past history tells me I'm better off doing this now than waiting until the planking on the exterior is done. Once done, I'll paint the inside red and add the spiriting and deck clamp before painting.

Sounds like the clerk did his work on a Friday as the clock approached beer o'clock, Pat. I'm glad you got it sorted out and you not have to pound your head the desk some more.
-
Per the previous posts in this topic, you might look for a copy of AOTS Mary Rose. Also possibly the instructions from Jotika on their model.

Thanks for the likes and comments. I don't have a keel clamp or building slip. Had one way back years ago and never used it for some reason. I'm working on the varnishing then paint thing. Some testing shows I get a smoother finish (using a brush) but.... I'll probably just paint.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
