  1. Welcome to MSW, Pete from southern Oregon. I will encourage you to start a build log as it's a great way to meet other builders and get help.
  2. I would assume (probably a big mistake as we know what happens when assuming) that there would be stars and other "markers" on those planes so friendlies wouldn't mistake them for the bad guys. Your 3 pic down seems to be Catalinas with markings though not "all black". The 2nd one does have squadron markings with the roundel also.
  3. Dave, Do introduce yourself in the new member intro area. Also, feel free to open a log on your Dallas. It's a great way to meet other builders and also to share your work.
  4. Test first on some scrap brass if you have it. Possibly the thin CA may work using as little as possible. As for blackening... they could always be painted flat black.
  5. Good save on the fingerprint. As for taking a year... this isn't a race and like someone said about wine... all in it's own time;.
  6. I'm happy to see this log also. I think it'll be a big help to anyone else who builds her.
  7. Beautiful work. Have an adult beverage, relax, be proud of the ship, and contemplate your next model.
  8. Hello Free and welcome to MSW. By all means, do open a build log. ANCRE does have some wonderful monographs.
  9. I think the airbrush would work for the base coat but then there's a lot of blending and dry brushing to give it the look you want.
  10. They don't look "rubbish" from here Greg. They look pretty darn good. Even the decals look great.
  11. It's still available on the Seawatch Books site. However, if you don't mind gently used I have Volume 1 and I doubt I'll ever get around to bulding her. PM me if you're interested.
  12. I agree with with the others... tailor you bookshelf to your interests. Mine has some monographs (ANCRE for French ships and the TFFS) and a bunch of reference works for ships of the same period. Some are specific to a given country but all are in the same time frame. Some were bought just to read and learn how things were done in the past. One book to think about but there's much dissension among the ranks is Monfeld's Historic Ship Models. While it has errors, it's a pretty good starting point for research. I also have quite a few "history" type books just fill in gaps.
  13. Good question OC. If it were all grass, then pretty much the same color though shading on the side the sun doesn't shine on. As for bare dirt... it's a mix. Maybe airbrush the base brown and dry brush highlights and low lights to give it a less than smooth appearance?
  14. It looks to me that some of the drawings show what might be deck clamps such that a beam or beams could be laid then lay decking on top of them. From your research, your best guess is probably just as good (maybe better) than those that written books, etc. as you're looking at all sources equally.
  15. BranksSNYl, I've merged your posts on this topic into one topic. It'll be much easier for a reader to find them all in one place. Please, just add to it if you have more info/videos to add instead of opening a new topic.
  16. A big part of the problem with the Wasa is that after she sank, the King had the guns salvage by smashing holes in the deck to get to them. This also destroyed much of the rigging/masts.
  17. I decided to "size" the gunports and get the skin to match the port before going any further. Past history tells me I'm better off doing this now than waiting until the planking on the exterior is done. Once done, I'll paint the inside red and add the spiriting and deck clamp before painting.
  18. Sounds like the clerk did his work on a Friday as the clock approached beer o'clock, Pat. I'm glad you got it sorted out and you not have to pound your head the desk some more.
  19. Looking more and more like French villa, OC. As for the "dip" at the join... the ground wouldn't have perfectly flat anyway. But, maybe some standing water from the rains would look even better.
  20. Per the previous posts in this topic, you might look for a copy of AOTS Mary Rose. Also possibly the instructions from Jotika on their model.
  21. Thanks for the likes and comments. I don't have a keel clamp or building slip. Had one way back years ago and never used it for some reason. I'm working on the varnishing then paint thing. Some testing shows I get a smoother finish (using a brush) but.... I'll probably just paint.
  22. A great save on making those parts from scratch.
