    Welcome to MSW and from southern Oregon. Semper Fi to a former Marine who was also young and confused. I would suggest you start a build log in the Kit Build Log area as it's a great way to get help and meet people.

    It's great to see you back, Slog. And the detail work is impressive.

    The beauty of wooden ship building like this is simple.... It's wood, it can be fixed. Most mistakes like this will covered up with planking. Keep a small log or notebook and list the "oops" as you realize them. Next build, you'll know what to watch out for. There is is learning curve and sometimes it goes down really hard and really fast. Just a part of building.

    From here, it looks like you need some more sanding the bulkheads to shape them for a smooth curve of the planks fore and aft. But otherwise, looks like a great start.

    Methinks its some form of mild insanity, Jeff. Not bad enough to get you locked away or some heavy medication, but enough to build model ships.

    It's great to see you back, Remco. You were missed. Sorry about the job situation and all the turmoil that goes with but persevere, the right job will open up to you. Ryland's suggestion about logs for your plastic models is spot on.

    I would go with the book for starters. For a kit, next to machine tools are needed. You might look at this article, https://thenrg.org/articles/basic-tools and then find out what he doesn't have.

    I got the shivers just looking at those last two paintings..... brrrrrr....

    It's basically a decorative model. Thousands of these were made from around 1930 to well into the 1960's. So there really isn't a "name" as such so you are free to name it anything you like.

    You might give some thought to opening a log in the Scratch area for the appropriate time era and add the label "Restoration".

    Have you seen this scratch build log? His first post mentions buy the plans but I have no idea how accurate they are.

    Thanks for the comments. It's frustrating but not a disaster. I've cut the over wide planks down which helped mentally. Now I'll sit back, have my beverage and sort things out. Like many of us, there's always seems to be that moment when you feel like just tossing it but I'm more determined than ever to get it done and get it done right.

    Hi John, welcome to MSW. I'm looking forward to seeing your log and how the build goes. Modeling is a very soothing to the soul endeavor. It has it's frustrations but overall it's very helpful. PTSD is horrible. I have it myself from 'Nam and only in the last several years did I recognize it and get some help.

    Just brief status update.... not dead in the water but just slow going due to outside events and some stupidity on my part. Discovered after putting on 4 strakes, getting the gunports squared away on that I blew it. Stupid error... used the wrong width of planks. <sigh> Had the saw setup for 1/4" cuts for the wales and somewhere in the mists of the last few weeks/months, forgot to change the cut width to 3/16". <sigh> Had to rip off the 4 strakes, clean up the hull and re-cut the cut wood for the correct size. I think I'm going to take the day off, engage in some web browsing along with some strong drinks.

    I'd suggest something like one of Chuck's ships boats kits. There's no masts, it's big enough and detailed enough to give you a good start. There's also plenty of logs and folks that can help you out.
