18th Century Harbour Crane by Ekis - Shipyard - 1/72 - CARD
mtaylor replied to Ekis's topic in Completed non-ship models
Beautiful work and hard to believe it's card. A diorama at some point would really make it pop. -
Quick find index
mtaylor replied to Jeff5115's topic in How to use the MSW forum - **NO MODELING CONTENT**
Mark your log as finished and also add finished to the "tags". Both can be done if you go back to the first post in your log and edit it. . Currently, one of the moderators goes through and picks up the finished logs for the index. We hope to have it automated at some point. -
Bone models are fascinating. We had a builder who started a scratch log using bone but he never finished. Not sure what happened to him.

Welcome to MSW, Jim. I hope you will start a build log as it's the best way to get help and make friends here.

Byrnes thickness sander vs Micro Mark's
mtaylor replied to twintrow's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I haven't been using it actually thickness but just to get rid of the sanding marks from a former (not Chuck) supplier. I had planned on it though but maybe later on this year I'll see what the problem really is as I do have some wood to be thicknessed. I suspect part of it is the rubber insert the sanding sleeve goes one. -
Byrnes thickness sander vs Micro Mark's
mtaylor replied to twintrow's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I've been thinking of it even though the thickness sander I have is seldom used. -
Two questions... Mast and rigging related.
mtaylor replied to Jorge Hedges's topic in Masting, rigging and sails
There's been a lot of discussion on this. Try searching this sub-forum for "rigging" and "tools". Many of us use surgical type tools as well as things like clothes pins to hold the rigging tight while being secured. The other place to look is here: https://modelshipworld.com/forum/17-model-tips-and-tricks-and-making-jigs/ -
I see you posted that question in the proper forum and you'll have good chance if getting an answer there. Also, use the search feature and search for log. They'll have a ton of info.

I remember doing those "float boats" as a kid. Had a lot of fun. The only time you'd use "Finished" in a title is for a build log. As for the signature... top of the page where your name is, there's a little upside down triangle. Click it and pick "Account Settings". The Signature topic is located on the left hand side. Click and you'll find it. Hope this helps. -
This has been a wonderful build and very well done. Thanks for letting us follow along.

Byrnes thickness sander vs Micro Mark's
mtaylor replied to twintrow's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
Basically the MM is the same way as far as adjustment for the Byrnes. However, I've noticed that the tolerances are bit off or maybe it's the rubber axle for the sanding sleeve so the board being sanded ends up with one side being "short" and the other being "long". The only fix I can find is to run the wood through once and flip it over. Alternating back and forth. A PITA though. -
The problem I see is look at the two blocks, one at each end. On the right side just past the yard is a vertical line.. that's the end of the yard. The next two parallel lines are for the dimension. I think the yard as is, is spot on or darn close.

I've just now found and wandered into the shop.... The jig alone is a project. Looks like everything is going well, from here. I'll get a seat for this.

I don't know if you have them where you are, but many lawn and garden stores carry square vinyl fence post covers that around 4 to 6 inches square. I've found them ideal for storing wood as they stiff and I can stack them high. I do use the longest ones I can find and cut them half so I have two pieces for storage.

The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
