Cutting Planks
mtaylor replied to sfotinos's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
I do what Downer suggests. There are sanders with miter gauges (small sanders from places like MicroMark) but they seem to "eat" too much material. -
Maybe this will help you get one started:

You can add those on the first post of a topic if you're the poster, Claire. If you're not the original poster, an admin or moderator can add them.

Rob, That's a great idea. Think about posting and sharing it here:

Hmm.. weird. I'm seeing them also if I go to IE11 instead of Chrome. OS is Win7. Very strange and very slow to load the page. Looking good now that I can see the pics but IE 11 loads all pages (not just this one) dead dog slow. Need to wrap my head around this. I'll also ask the Admins.

Just a suggestion... You could cut the one have made in half and fake the mounting to the shaft since it won't be seen. Then no need to make more. You could probably use the one you have for this. Unless there's more of the upper part that will be visible... then <shrugs> you'll have to make more.

Are you uploading them to MSW? There's a "Drag files here to attach, or choose files" at the lower left hand side. Hit "choose files". Once in put the course where you want the picture. Then use the left side of the thumbnail (high and hard to see) to insert the photo.

I agree with Carl on the audience. They do look very pleased and hopefully won't take "home" a souvenir. Question, is the framing glued in place? That looks like it will limit access for painting the deck. You have more patience than I for all that brass work.

Be safe, Dave. The storm will be what it wants to be and all we can do is either get out of the way or ride it out. I pray all goes well.

What works for me is type text. When I want a picture, stop typing and add it then resume typing. But first I upload all the pictures for that post. I have yet to see a perfect system anywhere for doing posts with pictures. It seems they all work differently and some are better than others. MSW's isn't bad but it does have it's quirks.

Indeed, a shim is needed. Read far enough ahead so that you understand the process and the settings for the rest of the bulkheads. Hold off gluing them until the rest have been fitted to make sure that everything is as it should be. I hope you're enjoying the process.

Be careful with that milkshake mixer, Lou. I have visions of you covered in paint. You might try a shaped paper clip cut down and used at low speed in a slow speed drill (not a dremal). You want the paint mixed, not whipped and full of air. I've done this in the past but practice on an empty jar that has some water in it so as not to irritate the admiral if things get out of hand.

There... fixed that for you. If you go to edit or even before posting and hover over the offending photo, you should see a tiny trash can top right in the photo list at the bottom. You may have to scroll down to see it.

I'll go along with what Chris said and add "buy what you need, when you need it" as this is a first model. I do have one suggestion though. Go to a local beauty supply house and look at their disposable nail files and foam sanding blocks (blocks of foam covered in sandpaper. They come in assorted grits and are relatively cheap. But the "buy what you need" still applies and I should know that because when I discovered these standing strips, I bought a lot of them and still have way more than I'll ever use in my tool chest.

Pat, Are those actually around the mast? Just seems strange but then <shrugs>. Since it was for a dignitary, might they have put there to keep exploring fingers away from the stack?- 993 replies

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
