It's great to see you made your way back, Aggie still looks good, even better with more rigging done.

I'm pulling up a chair, Jack. Will you be going for the "original" or current" configuration? Now to go find a seat and some popcorn.

Perhaps a dumb observation... I would assume that Grace's fleet was a mixed bag of local ships and captured ships, so they would have picked up improvements and new designs from the captured ships wouldn't they? I can't see design being static as history reflects that armies and navies continually upgraded using captured ships as a source of information.

Words fail me, Doris. This is like watching Da Vinci or Raphael at work. The more one looks, the more one sees in the details.

Quarter Galley Roof

I wouldn't think they would be iron at that point in time, but more likely wood that was shaped and carved. -

Seeing the young lad building away makes me smile. I'm seeing other logs where the children (both boys and girls) are building with dad. Wonderful.- 7 replies

How was the 2018 Conference?
mtaylor replied to VinceMcCullough's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
Is there a link to take a look this "internal live center"? I'm not sure what I'm seeing in the pictures. -
It happens to the best of engineers, Peter. I saw it too often when I worked in engineering decades ago before moving to IT. Seems the brain focuses on one problem and doesn't see other problems it's creating. In some circles, they would say you dove down the rabbit hole. Been down it more than a few times myself. I hope that going "global" for a bit will clear things up and you find you're not far off.

Just catching up, OC. Nice work on the gammoning. The only way I've found to keep thread from doing what it wants is to draw it through a block of beeswax.

Michael, Have you considered using car wax on the shafts? Since she'll be sailing, I hope you can prevent the rusting.

Tools, tools and more tools....
mtaylor replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I quite agree with Bob's tool rules. For the last year, I've been tossing catalogs away unread as I know what will happen if I open one. Yes, I'm a toolholic and in recovery. It's hard to resist temptation. -
There's been a few builds around here using that method but with starch instead of acetone.

Depth of rabbet cut.....??
mtaylor replied to CPDDET's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Personally, I would sand instead of deepen the cut but that's just an opinion when I look at my own skills.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
