kit review 1:100 Santa Maria 'First Step' - Amati
mtaylor replied to James H's topic in REVIEWS: Model kits
Seeing the young lad building away makes me smile. I'm seeing other logs where the children (both boys and girls) are building with dad. Wonderful.- 7 replies

How was the 2018 Conference?
mtaylor replied to VinceMcCullough's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
Is there a link to take a look this "internal live center"? I'm not sure what I'm seeing in the pictures. -
It happens to the best of engineers, Peter. I saw it too often when I worked in engineering decades ago before moving to IT. Seems the brain focuses on one problem and doesn't see other problems it's creating. In some circles, they would say you dove down the rabbit hole. Been down it more than a few times myself. I hope that going "global" for a bit will clear things up and you find you're not far off.

Just catching up, OC. Nice work on the gammoning. The only way I've found to keep thread from doing what it wants is to draw it through a block of beeswax.

Michael, Have you considered using car wax on the shafts? Since she'll be sailing, I hope you can prevent the rusting.

Tools, tools and more tools....
mtaylor replied to CPDDET's topic in Modeling tools and Workshop Equipment
I quite agree with Bob's tool rules. For the last year, I've been tossing catalogs away unread as I know what will happen if I open one. Yes, I'm a toolholic and in recovery. It's hard to resist temptation. -
There's been a few builds around here using that method but with starch instead of acetone.

Depth of rabbet cut.....??
mtaylor replied to CPDDET's topic in Building, Framing, Planking and plating a ships hull and deck
Personally, I would sand instead of deepen the cut but that's just an opinion when I look at my own skills. -
I take it the capstan will have the mast coming out of it as in the movie? That bit still have me going "what the???".

Here's a picture of my solution. PVC fence post liners from the home improvement store. Cut to length and stacked.

How was the 2018 Conference?
mtaylor replied to VinceMcCullough's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
Are there any photos of the conference forthcoming? I would hope so. -
I just moved it Dave. I'll leave a "pointer" for you and others. It's in the non-ship model area.

Hi Dave, I think many if not all of us have a burn out at some point in a build. Maybe open a log for the sweet Jag in the non-ship model area? I'd love to see this one being done.

I'm backing up a bit... about barrels. It was common for the cooks to bring up the barrels of salt pork, drain off the brine and add fresh water to them to dissolve the salt. These barrels would often be fixed to the channels so to keep them out of the way. I've also read about the men "hanging" as such, off the side to do their waste disposal when the facilities at the bow had a long line. So, I guess my question is, were the barrels holding dinner or waste?

Beautiful build, Bob. Congratulations. Will be covering her with a clear case to protect it and keep the dust off?

Syren Rope Rocket
mtaylor replied to DelF's topic in Rope Making/Ropewalks's Commercial sources for ropewalk machines
Nice looking rope, Vaddoc. Are you "setting" the line (I think that's the correct term). After taking it off the ropewalk, give the rope a sharp yank to set it. You'll need to do the complete line in sections. I've not made much rope yet, mostly tested my ropewalk and the the setting seems to make a difference.- 42 replies

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
