Beautiful and breath-taking work, Bob. I'll have to go find a seat for the Halifax build.

Bite the bullet and digitize. Once it's in the 'puter, it's not that hard to manipulate it. I use CorelDraw (2D for use on the laser cutter) and once you get the rhythm and workflow, it goes pretty easy.

I'm sorry to hear about your iPad. Is there an Apple store near you or a repair facility? They can probably open it, dry it, clean out the salt and hopefully get it operational again. Indeed... an external back up device (and NOT the cloud) is highly recommended. Disconnect until ready to do a backup as the bad guys out there will nail your connected backup if they get a chance.

Stunningly beautiful... Nils. The amount of detail is amazing right down to the tiny grates on the funnel supports. Takes my breath away.

Looks great, Chuck. That's probably a valid fear and I would follow it. As for changing the title... go back the very first post and find "edit" and click on it. You should be able to change the title there. Edit: I just checked and you can edit it there.

Chris, If you use the recommended blades from Thurston for the Jim saw (or any saw they'll fit and Thurston has a lot of different sizes) all will be well. Having a back up saw isn't a bad idea as I'm sure there's things you'll want to use the Preac for. Seems we all have to find out what works for us in tools.

B.E. A thanks for what you're doing. I was expecting the "executive summary" like many of did after the Big Crash of '13. This is very well done. I'm happy to see it back as I'll be using some of your methods (especially the boats) on my build.

Most kit models? Probably yes there are more. But all kit makers have their own way of doing things. If MS didn't do one then that's correct for the kit. As for scratch.... very few do double planking as the real ships weren't double planked.

Looking good, Keith. I'm curious how this will come out. I've seen other methods but yours is just different enough due to the brass part to make me want to try it.

Thanks for the link, Jack. Interesting read.

As thin as the 2nd planking is, maybe it's better to not do it? I went the other way on my Wasa... added a second layer of paper thin planks. Unnoticeable.

I love her looks, Jack. I have no idea what you're talking about on the lazy jacks, but i'm assuming the rigging. Can't wait to see the sails.

Nice work, Maury. There's the disadvantage of power tools (lathes, mills, and laser cutters). They do the job very well, but the setup and teardown takes longer than the job itself.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
