small production line is right, there are only 5 winches (plus prototype) , but one machine comprises 36 individual parts.

Will you have steam winches on the "Pequot" also ?

It seems that there should be.  I haven't found any yet but I find new things all the time.

when the time comes for fitting out Pequot`s deck......, they have some cast winches in scale 1:96 here....,

the winches are coming together quite well. Have meantime made out another two slightly different (narrower) looking winches on the boats deck, of which I unfortunately do`nt know the function....and there are only two of them on the entire boatsdeck

 

The status of the 6 cargo winches....

To figure out, what the requested winches were for, it could be helpful to see a bit more from the whole deck.

Nils, Winches are looking great .As for the odd balls if they were used for the lifeboats there would have to be some blocks and tackle to go with them. Since the winches are set up for a fore and aft pull.

unfortunately I have no other pics of these other winches on the boats deck, I`m adding an outcut of the appropriate boatsdeck`s length, but also there is no hint for the possible ussage....

I also thought of that explaination Steve, but in an emergency case there would have to be several boats swung out and and lowered simultaneously and each single boat having fore and aft line, and what in case of lack of steam (explosion in Boiler rooms or so)

Are that half rounded structures left from the winches hatches? Then they could be meant as loading winches, just a suggestion!

I think those half-rounds are the vents.    I thought that also until I went back and compared the photo to the plan.    I'm not seeing anything on the plan within a reasonable distance to those winches.  No hatches, no booms.

My guess is that they would handle the life boats manually in case all power fails.

 

Sorry for not being helpful, I'm an airplane guy, no life boats, just inflatable slides and rafts

Been off air for a while. Great job on the winches. Regarding the small ones near the life boats...... could they be only use for disable people to enter the life boats? Just assuming and trying to give you some ideas "outside of the box".

to date I also have no theory what those narrow winches are for. The wind drums are orientated to pull in longside deck direction

at the end of the port / Stb lifeboat rows there is on each side  a stack of three collapsable lifeboats (stapled). Thought that perhaps these boats would have been pulled / slid over the boatsdeck by means of a winch, into a position where there was just an empty place under the davits, that had already lowered their actual boat. But there are too many deck components and vents in the way, so that would`nt work either

not a bad idea Greg, but around 1900 I do`nt think that the shipowners had the wellfare of "disabled" in their mind yet. Also as Mark mentioned there are no booms, no pulleys, etc. installed

 

Perhaps some day by coinsidence someone may come across the solution to that question...

First it's a wonderful build, I've been following and enjoying.

 

Now, about the winches: I think what you are missing is a plan where they show a layout for eyebolts on deck 

and on the sides of the deck houses to know where you can attach a block to change the direction of the rope run,

The rope must be fed into the winches drums as straight as possible, so to work the boats you would have to have a block through

wich the rope would go and make a 90 degree turn, Even so I think two or at most three boats could be worked.

On the other hand you have two funnels that need constant touching up and a lot of very heavy rigging that also need

to be looked after and eventually replaced at regular intervals and those stays are heavy.

 

Perhaps?....I don't know, but I can't resist imagining how things can possibly work.

for your input on this, and for looking in, a good analysis of yours, yes it makes sense, that the machine is a kind of "multi purpose winch", in combination with appropriate rollers, blocks, etc, for leading the lines into the required directions. Unfortunately impossible to get a detailed plan of the eyebolts

on larger ship like these,  they have winches and pumps that are steam and electrically powered.   perhaps this might be the case?

I have looked up all my books of the great liners, especially trying in vain to find somewhere a photo of the boats deck showing that sort of winch, and possibly showing also how the davit`s lines (if used for lowering boats) were rigged to the winch

thanks for looking in and for your nice compliment. I was stuck a bit in the winch fabrication, lifeboats and vents, and sorting out the related design, so there is not much progress on the basic model, but following your wish, I`m happy to show the present state (pics taken  this afternoon )

Thanks so much to my fellow builders for your much appreciated and kind compliments .........Jason, Pete, Bob (Rafine), Kees, Piet, Greg, Grant,

and all the "likes" for looking in...

 

I may have to "step a little slower" in the next days and weeks, because my doc diagnostified suspect on cervical disc herniation, currently causing me much pain in  neck shoulder and arm, right down to the hand. I have an appointment for MRT examination and will the know more then, meantime wil be having therapeutical massages, and swallowing much "Aspirines"
