So far, the hull shape seems acceptable enough to warrant proceeding to framing the gun ports ;)

Sigh, it's times like these that I wish I was building a 4-gun schooner, instead of a 28-gun frigate

Aldo

Great job Aldo, looking very sweet! Re the gunports - be thankful then that it's not a 100 gun ship! :P

Sweet work Aldo.  I'll bet you never thought you had it in you.  But then again, most of us don't know if we do until we try.  Carry on, sir..... doing great!!!!!!

Thanks very much for the kind words, guys

@David and Pete: thanks for dropping by my log :)

@Sjors:  hope all is well with you my friend, have a speedy recovery :)

@Grant: yup, I'm thankful indeed, you have to tell me your secret on how you cope up with all those ports :D

@Mark: it has been quite a learning curve indeed, working with CAD and understanding druxey's articles were the most challenging of them B)

Your first planking looks better then my usual final planking.  Well done!

As an uneducated aside, I recall visiting a 19th Century vessel at Mystic Seaport and one of the restoration gentlemen was on board.  He informed me that wood having a special grain was also used for items like the knees that support the deck beams.  I'd say the old time shipwrights were pretty crafty when it came to which wood to use where.

Augie, thanks for the technical info, that "special timber" was probably the compass oak that I read before, those old shipwright are indeed very cool and creative individuals B)

Hi Aldo,

It goes step by step but I'll be coming there.

Today I went to the workbench, take a seat, watch the ratlines and…..walk downstairs again because I forgot my glasses………and don't go up again…..  :P  :P  :P

Thanks for asking !

Thanks Ben, my first planking has quite a lot of pointy plank-ends, but hopefully, I'll be able to do a more accurate job on the second layer  :)

Aldo, the planking looks really clean!. Looking forward to the second layer.

You had some rain in your world the last couple of weeks, good to see you have not needed to check your build for leaks! Stay dry.

Aldo,

Nice work on the planking. From reading your log, looks like you're going to double-plank and was wondering what wood you plan to use for the second layer. You surely have a great base for it, nice work.

Hi Randall,

Thanks for dropping by my log, as well as for the kind words. Regarding the second layer, I plan to use Swiss Pear if the gunports and the bulwarks come out acceptably :)

Best regards,

Aldo

Aldo, this is going to be my first scratch build and I noticed you are doing it at 1/64. So your looking at the msw plans at 75% right ? I want to do it POF but at 1/64.

great job by the way !

Hi Sport,

Thanks for dropping by my log, sorry for the very late reply, been busy with other things lately.

Yeah, 1/64 would be 75% of the MSW plans.

EDIT: by the way, I dropped by your log and must congratulate you on an excellent start, keep up the good work! :)

Hi Aldo

It is only now I came across your buildlog, my sincere congrats and admiration for your first attempt to join what is called the "dark side".

When, I don't know, but by following your buildlog , hopefully I'll find the courage to join you over there.

Keep up the good work !

Kind regards

With the excellent scratch-building work you're doing on your HMS Diana, I have no doubt that you will have an easy time at the "dark side". Come jump right in my friend  ;)

Hello Guy,

Aldo hasn't posted lately because he is facing a health issue. Frank (Riverboat) posted this in sickbay.

I think it will take some time before Aldo will be back to answer your question.

Thanks Anja and Guy, sorry for the very delayed reply, I'm still adjusting to my current health condition.

I apologize that I may not be able to return the lost pics as I've disposed of a significant number of my files already :(

My Triton, if my health condition permits, will be double planked with better wood and hopefully in a more correct planking pattern :)

Best regards,

Aldo

Nice to see you back. I sincerely hope your health condition improves to allow you more time in the shipyard.

Hi Aldo, I've missed you mate, been a while.

I certainly hope that your health improves my friend and that some building no matter how small resumes.

These last few years have not served you well and I sincerely hope and pray they are behind you, I wish you blue skies on the horizon my friend.
