Old Collingwood Posted March 31, 2019 Author Share #755 Posted March 31, 2019 Evening all back on with the pearl today, I finished off fitting the top foremast shrouds., then I lashed them around the top to secure them - they still need thier ratlines. I then decided to make the foremast lower spar - this is going to be wood made from dowel (the same with all the spars) first I used the pre-molded spar/sail as a template and cut the dowel to the correct length, then I marked each side of the dead center where the taper will start - I then used a combination of my curved scraping tool and sanding stick to shape each end - slighty time consuming and tedious, but I think I achieved the result - then I drilled the linking hole in the dead center and then fitted the two lift blocks at each end. It will be painted/weathered then glued in place and lashed around the foremast. Just the one pic showing he spar/blocks. The plastic ones are quite good mate and they have the rings on the ends making for better attachment - when painted I dont think you can tell the difference. Old Collingwood Posted April 2, 2019 Author Share #772 Posted April 2, 2019 Good day all, Firstly as always thank you so mush for all the imput and the likes, more with the foremast yard, I painted/weathered it then ran the lift ropes through the blocks on the yard, I then glued the yard to the mast and lashed it inplace, then I pulled the lift rope taught at both ends and through the top blocks, but during tentioning one of the blocks broke away - so I had to make a way of conecting back to the mast top, I did this with some thread tied and glued - this repaired it but did leave both side slightly differently tentioned with the blocks at different placement from the mast head. Anyway after painting the ropes to blend in with mast head - it kind of slightly hid my errors. Old Collingwood Posted April 3, 2019 Author Share #775 Posted April 3, 2019 Not a great day today infact it was one of this flipping frustrating days at the bench where I took about six steps back First I started to do the upper foremast ratlines - talk about fiddly - my method using the tools I have was to cut a managable length of thin black thread then tie a simple singke knot at one end then and apply a dab of ca direct from the plastic bottle (that did start with a fine end but the glue soon eats it away - Locktite glue that is) also battling with the nozzle keep blocking, I use an angled pair of tweezers to catch the thread between shrouds and pull it through then simple loop over and a dab of ca, then the same at the end - then cut off at the shroud. So far so good apart from the dabs of ca on each junction (they look messy) so I finnished the ratlines on that section. But - I broke the lift blocks due to constantly knocking the yard, so I decided to cut both away and start again, I tried to simply glue both lift blocks to the side/top/underneath of the tops - but I had no room to handle them due to the upper shrouds getting in the way, when I did manage to secure them (not securley) I tried to run more ca around where they were joined but I managed to block the holes with ca where the ropes are supposed to run through - so I ripped them off turned the light off and walked away from the bench slighly frustrated/annoyed and wondering why I bother to try to do things so frustrating and fiddly.
