John W Brown by Jack12477 - FINISHED - Trumpeter - 1:350 - PLASTIC - liberty ship

Recommended Posts

I used lifecolours on my KGV. The colours are nice but nothing that could not have been made up using Grunze or Tamiya which can pretty much be diluted with water. Vajello and I are not friends and numerous people have the same opinion.

Grey, as seen in direct sunlight or heavy cloud changes so much. I think it’s probably it worth getting stuck in the weeds with ‘special colours’. Modulation brings out the angles and details so you’ll need several shades of grey anyways. I agree with the very fine Tamiya rattle can primer.

I think one one can be a bit of a river counter when it comes to correct colours as wartime paints would have varied by several hues.

This is the USS Cimaron in 1945, you can see the deck details are just delicious. I imagine a merchant marine ship would be a weathering dream!

I hope you decide to go with the rigging Jack. It would add quite a lot to the model. there are plenty of pictures of Liberties for reference as well as the real thing not all that far from you.

Jack,

Your John W. Brown turned out very nice. In fact, it looks just like the one I toured this summer. :D I would also encourage you to add the rigging. There's really not that much to contend with, especially when you compare it to the Willie L. Bennett or Marie Jeanne you built.

Reed.

Thanks Reed.   At least the Willie L Bennett and Marie Jeanne came with rigging plans/diagrams, this kit has none and all the photos I can find do not show the lines end to end. Still trying to find diagrams.  But I have to wait for a re-supply of EZ line and some other items first.

Would this work for you Jack?

If that won't work for you, here is the original source and you can blow them up as much as you need to see or make large prints. http://www.themodelshipwright.com/high-resolution-ship-plans/cargo-ships/liberty-ship-arthur-m-huddell/

As a diversion while I await delivery of additional supplies, I decided to work on this Tamiya LVTP 7A1 amphibious tank (USMC)

Looks like you have already made quite a bit of progress on the LVTP Jack. Are you going to do the camo like on the box top? Your figure certainly has a strange pose!

I'm going to try and do the camo as winter camo.  I've got too many other tanks in jungle and/or desert camo, but only one in winter camo.

Yea, that figure stands atop the tank !

Well after pouring over the diagrams and various other photos/drawings I found on the Internet. I decided to keep the rigging simple. After obtaining a roll of EZ-Line ( I thought I was ordering BLACK Fine Rope according to the picture but got Brownish/Red Fine Rope instead) - I chose FINE over HEAVy because the documentation stated that FINE was appropriate for N scale (1:160) or Z scale (1:220) and the model is 1:350, so the FINE would be slightly large for the scale.

I cut some pulley blocks from the PE strip for the kit and attached a few to the rigging, didn't paint them because I wanted them to stand out somewhat rather than disappear. The EZ-Line instructions called for using a pin-drop of Thin CA to attach the EZ-Line; well the CA reacted with the rubber in the EZ-Line thread and the fumes gave me a wicked sinus issue.  Switched over to Gator Grip for the rest of the installation.

Did some "weathering" with chalk dust and some dry brushing with paint over the hull, deck, funnel.

Here's the photos of the finished model

Glad to see that you added the rigging Jack. It made the ship look much better, so did the weathering.

Thanks for letting us come along for the build.

Ok, what’s next?

Well, first I need to finish this diversionary project I started while awaiting a re-supply. Have to finish the camo paint, weather it, and some extra detailing, then on to ????????   Maybe another destroyer, or destroyer escort, maybe even the sister Liberty Ship O'Brien ????  Not sure yet ?
