Getting close to finishing up chapter 3, have a few loose ends to clean up and some moulding to fix, But here’s some fresh updates still showing wet WOP.

Thanks for the Likes and comments guys, I appreciate it.

Ron- I do have an idea in mind for a display case and it will definitely go in one ASAP for protection. I’m tossing around the idea of lighting the model this time rather than the case. I need to find period correct lighting arrangements before I begin though.

Yours will get there before you know it, the planking is the biggest hurdle but sets the bar for the rest of the model, so go slow! I’m so glad I did (7 months I think).

dvm- I did not modify the frieze color at all, I think it’s a lighting angle. I did however drown them in WOP once glued down which I think may have made them appear a bit darker/wet. The blue on the upper transom is painted though, in Celeron blue acrylic, I bought a few different bottles of it until I found one that matched the frieze pretty close, it definitely got darker once I applied the WOP, I think I can live with it though.

Looking awesome JJ; trying to find the moulding you need to fix and can't see it.

Thanks Greg, moving along slow and steady.

i had to replace the upper counter moulding on the transom and the port middle q-gallery moulding.

Not going to lie Ron, I bought the CAF scraper as well as the AL set. Between the four different scrappers I managed to cover all the profiles required for Winnie, some required some minor modifications. Even then I had a lot of wasted pieces until I figured it out and started making moulding that looked acceptable. I Do recommend them all though. Tom at CAF sent the scrapper out very quick and it actually didn’t take long to get here as I thought it would.

Merry Christmas to my fellow Winchelsea builders and everyone on MSW!

been toying around with interior lighting and I think I found something I like. These LEDs are literally half a mm if that and have a nice warm glow to them similar to candlelight. What do you think?

I think the lighting gives a nice subtle effect, JJ.

Just to be clear, Tom doesn't sell these scrapers as part of his stock. I believe they were custom designed based on your drawing files. But perhaps he should as they seem to cover the gamut of profiles.

Hi dvm,

thanks, I’m going to 3-D print period correct lamps for these lights and keep it as close to the real thing as possible. I saw some good examples online and from master and commander...😁

i did buy the scrapper right off his site, you have to dig for it but it’s there. This link should take you right to it:

That looks really neat with the lights, JJ.  It will look amazing with the interior done.

Thanks Matt, I’ve always wanted to light one of these models. I’m going to keep it subtle.

FYI, the pictures are really accurately representing how it actually looks Incase anyone was wondering. I used Evans designs, the smallest one available in yellow believe it or not.

Thanks for the scraper info JJ! I have the A.L set already so it's a start! Going to order up a set from Tom now. Merry Christmas to you as well :)

About those LED's, just perfect! The yellowish tone to the light seems to really emulate that candle/whale oil glow. What voltage are they rated at?

They would look amazing along with having the stern lantern lit up

Hi Ron, thank you, I’m sold on the leds now and will be ordering about 20 or so this week. Also going to get started on the lanterns, I’ll keep everyone updated on that mini project.

they are rated 5-12vdc And are very affordable. Wires are nearly microscopic, so very easy to hide away... I do plan to illuminate the stern Lantern now that I can do it without showing any wires.

Alright I have a small update finally! Lol

got all my super small almost impossible To work with, LED’s installed and wired, I’m going to run a micro plug through the bottom of the keel that will meet the other end on the stand, powering all the lights with a 9vdc source. It will be impossible to see unless you turn her over.

i finally thought of a way to make a scale lantern out of a kids juice box straw, a bunch of reject Boxwood columns And some copper foil. This is the first of many so I shoved it down in the hold In hopes of the rest turning out much better. Once the electrical connection is finished through the keel and the hold lights are complete I will resume progress on chapter 4!!

Small update:

So I have finally finished my side project of adding all the wiring and lights I want to use, which took way longer than anticipated! Provisions have been made for the stern lantern down the road. You can see a small connecter that I ran through the keel up underneath the sub deck, the female plug sits flush with the bottom of the keel and the male plug

which sticks out now will eventually be hidden within the blocks that the model will sit on so there will be no signs of any wiring or electrical work when she’s complete. I Also got the sub decks glued down, I took Mikes advice and used CA To place these. It took quite some time to get these where I wanted them and I still made a few mistakes which I can live with and correct in the decking process. I milled a bunch of lumber last night and plan to start the spirketing this weekend. Feels good to be back on track again.
