HMS Triton Cross Section by Rusty - FINISHED - 1:48

Recommended Posts

It’s time to make the gangway iron supports.

Between the various heights of the gun deck spirketing and the gangway

clamp each bracket will have to be to custom fit at their correct location.

Here is the first bracket being test fit.

All the pieces ready for soldering.

And the first one soldered.

Now I just have to clean it up and make seven more. :)

Rusty,

good start with the brackets. My cross section and the plans don't always exactly agree, so I used a piece of timber across the deck resting on the gangway ledges to provide a guide for the underside of the gangway planking. This helped to get the correct angle for the brackets and eliminated the possibilty of them getting out of alignment.

Regards,

Grant.

Thanks Paddy and Antony.

Ben, I used a torch and regular solder.

Grant. Plans and build match? Never had that happen for me! I also used

a plank to check both the height and angle. I marked each bracket and each

location as they were all unique.

Here they are drying. Coat two of ?????? Not gonna be twenty though Ben. ;)

Rusty:

The guns looks very good. I have only one concern. Did you double check the diameter of the breechings? It might be my imagination but they look a little large to me. It might be just the photo or something, but it might be worth checking.

The colors are great. I like the subdued tone of the red.

Hi Russ,

I used some .028” line I had for the breeching rope. It was the closest I had on hand.

Thanks on the colors. I’m real pleased with how they came out.

Hi Ben,

Have you still got that spy hidden in my shop? I started dusting the Echo off just last night! :D

Rusty:

The breechings for a 9 pounder at this scale should be about .029" so your choice of .028" was really just about right. Good going. :)

Hi Russ,

I wish I could take credit for great planning, but it looked ok and was what I had on hand.

Sometimes it just works out ok in the end.

I am using holly to make the gangways. I measured the length and glued them together

and then used a dremel drum sander to rough in the shape and sandpaper to finish it.

I used a little strange way to make the trim molding. It’s made out of pear. I cut the straight

top piece and then traced the shape for the two curves, cut it out and sanded it to shape. I

wasn’t having a lot of luck making individual pieces to fit the curve and for some reason a

whole piece was easier. Not the strangest thing I’ve done.

Thank you Paddy.

Hi Pete.

No bevel on the trim. The individual piece still has the pencil

lines on it and may give it a beveled look. :)

when I don’t have time for any modeling. :(

Thank you all for your very kind words. B)

Russ, I was pleased with the way the colors came out. I wasn’t really

certain how it would all look once completed.

Antony, As far as the case goes I’m going to semi cheat and get a premade

plexiglas box and just make the base for it to sit on. I thought about making

my own plexiglas box but I didn’t want to get into that yet.

Well I’ve started to make the ladders. I transferred the lines from the

plans to the wood, cut the slots for the treads with the table saw and

then cut the side pieces to the angle dictated on the plans remembering

to make a mirror of each one cut out.

Well I've installed the ladders and have started working on the case.

Here are the ladders,

The base is made out of oak. I used the full sized table saw to cut the recess for the plexi cover.

As I said before the cover was purchased on line as I did not feel comfortable making it on my own. (AKA Lazy) ;)

Gotta finish up the case, just a few fiddly things to do and clean her up and we should be done.
