Hello,

My name is Frank and I hope to be a modelholic.

I am retired and have time for things I never had time before. A while back (50 years) I attempted a Cutty Sark as my first model and it didn't go well. I was just out of the service struggling to support my new family and was overwhelmed by the model and didn't get far.

So, now that I am retired I am making up for all the things I couldn't do before.

I am a little different than most I expect. I don't want to do a modeling for the finished product. Instead I find challenging detailed projects to be calming, a way of immersing myself into something to the exclusion of all the noise in the world right now. As many have said, to me the journey IS the reward.

Since retiring 10 years ago I have re-taken up my youth passion of playing the saxophone. 5 years ago I started learning Cello, wow that is hard, and so satisfying. I have continued my lifelong passion with photography, and now, I hope to add wood model ship building to my stable of too much stuff to do!

I am excited that I found this site and look forward to learning and once I learn giving back to other noobies that need help.

Welcome Frank. Follow the steps and you will get through this. 😉

Many people here followed a similar path to the hobby and there are no rules saying that you can't have other interests as well (check out the 'shore leave' subforum) so pull up a chair and start your journey.

Your point about 'the journey' strikes a chord with me, perhaps others as well, since despite my expectations I have focused on research since retirement instead of actual model making. See where it goes, the idea is to enjoy it.

Regards, Bruce

Frank,  welcome to the forum.  I hope as a newbie to the hobby you will enjoy it and stick with it.

I do want to point out to you however that your build log for the Harvey was removed.  Being new to the hobby there is no way you could be aware of this but I must i form you that the Company in China you bought the kit from pirated it from a legit company.  They stole the design which is typical of what happens in China.

Buying or building or promoting these pirated kits is prohibited here do to the fact that it does unthinkable damage to the hobby and the legitimate companies that prepare these model kits.

Please do take some time to learn about the countless Chinese companies as well as a few others in Russia and elsewhere who steal intellectual property.

Please read through this topic which should give you an idea what to watch out for.

Thank you, I did know it was removed, I did not realize it had a copyright problem. Oh well, one thing I am certain of is that if the price is too good to be true, then it probably isn't good. And that is true again. I have toss that model and purchased a Model Shipways MS1460 18th Century Armed Longboat 1:24 Scale to do as my first build instead.

Let me add my welcome to MSW.  You chose a great model to replace the pirated Harvey.  When you begin, please start a build log so we can follow your journey.
