I'm gonna tell the Dr on you :P

...but seriously elm tree pumps from brass. ICK.

Your versions is far superior and I like your windlass tweaks.

I figure pain is a good gauge built into the body to tell you when enough is too much. Don't over do it, but I understand your pushing it. I worked outside Saturday and haven't been able to do anything until today. Sitting and staring at a wall gets quite boring after a while.

Jessie,

I'm playing catch-up on your log...  Very nicely done.  The Scottish Maid was my first model, the AL kit.  You've taken this to a whole different level and it's sweet.

Hi Jesse

Lovely work for a first model. I had both my carpal tunnels done about 5 years ago. Here in england its done under local , interesting experience! Once the Stitch's are out some GENTLE exercise is quite therapeutic. A few weeks down the line you will notice a big difference. Look forward to further posts in due course.regards....mick

  • 2 weeks later...

I used my hand too much & when they took the stiches out the incision wasn't as closed as it should have been. I can use my hand but taking it easy & keeping it taped shut as it continues to heal. Being held back from working on the ship more from my lyme disease. Having a bad flare up right now.  I have work on it some. Will try to get a few pictures up soon.

Thank you very much!

I've been using this downtime to go back & look at what might have been one wrong. I put my masts together like the instructions showed. They were not squared between the mast cap & crosstrees. I didn't want to tear it up & start all over so I figured out a way to add small "planks" of wood strips to square it up more & add some shape to them to make them more like they should be......

Good catch and fix on the mast!   Do take care of your hands / wrist and give them time to heal!

Jesse, that looks way better, must feel good to have that corrected.  Getting the masts square seems to take quite a bit of patience, your 'repair' is not even noticeable.  Well done.

Cheers,

I don't know if the Scottish Maids bowsprit started out square but I like the way it looks better & at least one other modeler has built theirs that way. So without tearing it out & rebuilding it I did the same thing as I did with the masts but with longer pieces. It took a couple of weeks to figure it out & get the parts right but I finally got it. Glued the flat sides on, temporarily tied them up for a tight fit, tapered between squared to round, retouched the paint & added the knight head & support back in place. Looks like I shaped it that way to begin with now.

Been busy sanding/filing belaying pins thinner. They are so fat they almost look like upside down bowling pins. Will try to get some pics up soon.

Wow JesseLee!

You are a great modeller, but not so good at following Doctor's orders I think  :P

Your fixing/improving on the parts is amazing, but even more impressive considering the challenges you are under at the best of times, let alone after surgery!!!  I particularly like the ingenious little bell haha.

But I do echo your other friends here and ask that you please don't do too much and let yourself heal as much possible.  Doctor's do know best!!  Besides, we would hate to lose you for longer :)

Jesse, those belay pins look fabulous.  I'm planning on changing out some of the oversized cleats with brass pins, but after seeing yours, I'm now thinking about making these out of bamboo skewers instead.  Thanks for the great idea!   Hope your wrists are feeling better.

Jumping around a bit. Shaped a few of the yards & started on some of the trusses. The foreyard truss is wood attached with metal pins & CA glue. Will add bands later. The lower fore topsail yard truss I made out of metal wire. Banded it onto the yard with flattened metal wire wrapped around & hooked into notches in the yard. CA glued them, filled in the area where the wire notched into the yard, filed it down to match the rest of the band & painted them. This was a little complicated, wrapping CA coated paper would have done & looked just as good but wouldn't have held the truss very strong.

Thanks everyone!

Not much work getting done, here are a few pics of progress on some of the yards. I have been doing a lot of thinking & planning. Doing some stalling because I am at the beginning of the rigging stages & I am not liking the rigging thread supplied in the kit. Trying to get the Admiral to let me order new rope from Chuck. Been looking his stuff over & it looks much better than what I have now. I guess I'll be shaping the rest of the yards, doing some weathering & other things in the meantime.

Hi JesseLee,

Just been catching up on your log. Some very impressive modifications you've done there - a huge improvement over the kit supplied parts. As for rigging thread, I switched over to using Chuck's thread for most of my Running Rigging (it wasn't available when I did my Standing Rigging) and all I can say is Wow - what a huge difference it is to work with and in final presentation. Well worth the extra investment, so keep sucking up to the Admiral until she caves and agrees to release funds! It's also worthwhile doing a bit of extra research to work out the various diameters needed for your scale. Using an appropriate variety really adds to the overall appearance.

Hope the hands are continuing to heal - don't overdo it in the shipyard!

Keith, my AL string looks like uneven poor quality string. Doesn't look like mini-rope at all.

Grant, I plan on getting 4 maybe 5 sizes & of course 2 colors- 2 are out of stock but Chuck tells me they will be available by the weekend.... Really hoping I can get the better rope

John, I did it the hard way. I used mini files to cut down the thickness & fingernail emery sticks to shape it up & finish it up. This is very difficult. They are so small & hard to hold (especially with one hand still with bad carpal tunnel , the other one still recovering from surgery, & severe nerve damage from late stage lyme disease). The emery boards are great sanding tools for small work. They are cheap, you can get them just about anywhere & they come in all different grits.

Hi Jesse

Your work is fantastic. Taking on the belaying pins is commitment indeed and well worth it!

Carry on and keep ship modelling!

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

My build has been on hold first from carpal tunnel release recovery, second from my lyme flaring up & third I wanted to replace the line supplied in the kit with something better. Got a package in the other day I have been waiting for from Syren Ship Model Co. Got my new rigging line in. This stuff is so much better quality! A side by side shot shows the difference! Rolled them up on some spools & was so ready to start back to building but Murphy's law rules around here. It's 95+ degrees & the fire ants fried our air conditioner. Another delay....
