That's a fine looking whaleboat John. Are you planning to leave them "bright" with just stain, and/or varnish, or painting the interior? Side note: made the decision to commit and start saving for that mill. I'll have it by the first week in Nov. Proxxon doesn't make a tilt-table for their divider do they? Might have to make one.

Since paper is wood, just thinner, does paper absorb paints differently than regular wood, making colors harder to match?

Looking good Tom! It won't be long before you're crossing over to the "Dark Side", and scratch-building.

That was some good "out-of-the-box" thinking in making the rings Robb. I think cleats or bolts would depend on whether or not the lines being attached to them are "tarred" standing rigging, or running rigging. Cleats would be for the running or working lines. Bolts would be for standing rigging or a place where a hook would go, like for train-tackle on the cannon carriages.

I think you'll figure it all out pretty quickly Ken. I'd hate to see you damage anything vital! Patrick, Ken's a braver man than me. I've never even done a wooden build yet, so there'll be a learning curve, until I get that down, let alone trying to figure out how to do card models right now. And that's because I don't want to damage anything vital either.

If you have a lathe or some way to center the drill on a home-made dowel ( reason for home-made is the grain on a regular dowel goes the wrong way), you could just drill out a dowel and shape it for rings.

Brian, I've been following Ken's (xken) build of the Niagara, and he came up with a pretty efficient way of rigging cannon and carriages. Starts here: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/10038-us-brig-niagara-by-xken-model-shipways-scale-164/page-11#entry325043 and continues here with the jig he used: http://modelshipworld.com/index.php/topic/10038-us-brig-niagara-by-xken-model-shipways-scale-164/page-12#entry327833 Cheers

Nice work furling the sail. It looks great. That's an interesting approach Frank, doing the yard and rigging for the sail first, before doing shrouds and ratlines. I'd be worried about the yard and running rigging getting in the way. Unless of course, you haven't placed it permanently.

You weren't kidding about honing up your origami skills Ken. It looks like the difficulty levels are up there with wood builds.

They were on yesterday Dennis. Sorry man. Was hoping you might have found it yesterday. It was like a 7-hour Titanic marathon.

They say there's no such thing as perfect, but if that hull and deck planking isn't perfect, it's so close to it, it ain't funny. Very nice John!!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
