New member looking for kit advice
Ryland Craze replied to JDillon's topic in New member Introductions
Hi J and welcome to Model Ship World. Chris has given you good advice. You mention that you have no prior experience, so you definitely need good instructions to guide you through your build. I would also start out with a simple kit to get use to building a wooden kit. You can download the instructions of many of Vanguard's kits by going to this website: https://vanguardmodels.co.uk/ Good luck on whatever kit you should decide to build. -
Hi Jake and welcome to Model Ship World. We have many Victory build logs on this site. Here is a link to all of them that have been tagged: https://modelshipworld.com/tags/Victory/

Hi Giuseppe and welcome to Model Ship World. I hope you find the plans to the Fram. It looks like this would be a nice model.

I use IrfanView to resize my photos to 1600 x 1200 pixels. Sometimes I will resize to 1200 x 900 if the photo does not have much detail in it.

The 5/32" mark on the planking fan is drawn to reference where the tick marks would be for a plank that is 5/32" wide. It also looks like you will need only 11 planks on bulkhead 1 based on your last picture. The two planks at the keel look like they will terminate at the stem (bow) before they reach bulkhead 1.

Jerry, To add additional content to an existing post, you would use the edit function in your post. This can be found by clicking your cursor over the three dots in the upper right hand corner of the post next to the post number and selecting the edit function. It would probably be better to add to your topic by replying to your post. This keeps a post from getting too long to read, which may turn off some of your viewers.

Mark, You have received some good advise. I would think the Sultana is a good kit to start with. There is a practicum on how to build this kit that was written by Chuck Passaro. It is located in the Articles Database near the bottom of the page at this link: https://thenrg.org/resource/articles Whatever kit you decide to start with, please start a build log so we can follow along.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
