I'm quite happy with the clear acetate stand and I appreciate it being included in the kits. I bought the beautiful stand that Chuck has available for his Medway Longboat which comes with personalized engraving. I think it's gorgeous. Chris could possibly consider designing some custom stands for his models at some point as well. I know Chuck's custom stands have been popular with modelers building his Syren kits. Just a thought... I would also purchase flags if they were made of high quality materials. Natural looking flags of the correct era and the right scale are hard to find. The glossy, stiff, paper flags that come with a lot of kits are awful, IMO. Appropriate flags for the Vanguard models could perhaps be offered as an optional purchase just like the sails.

Beautiful job on the copper plating, Rob! I don't like those tedious, repetitive tasks like that either....treenailing comes to mind also!

Grant, I was wondering what you were currently building and I just found your log. This is an unusual and interesting model. I love it that you have such a diversity of models you like to build. You're becoming a pro with that airbrush too. Perfection! I'll be following along. Good luck!

Fantastic build log, James! One of the things I love about this model is how much detail there is. At the same time, so much of the detail in the lower decks is covered up once the model is complete. Can you actually see much looking down through the main deck openings to the deck below with all the canons and the stove etc?

Please do! I'm very interested in both. I just looked at the photos of your LeTigre and HMS Swan dioramas and they are incredible! The dioramas add action to the model and really brings the ship to life. WOW!! Modifying the Sphinx into the HMS Camilla and placing it into a diorama will be amazing! I really like the Alaskan Yellow Cedar as well. I've only worked with some small pieces of boxwood and it holds an edge very well. I think the color variation is rather attractive in your planking as a whole also. Have you decided to continue on with your Flirt build?

Sorry if I'm being a bit dense but, just to clarify, when you say that you bevel the top edge of the entire plank, does the bevel looks more like the chamfer in the diagram I posted or the bevel in the diagram? Is the bevel just on the top, inside part of the plank or does the bevel start at the top, inside edge and go all the way to the bottom, inside edge of the plank? I hope that makes sense!

Thanks, Glenn. I've never clearly understood the difference between a bevel and a chamfer. I did some research and found the following illustration. So I'm assuming that you bevel as shown below. Do you just guess at the degree of the angle of the bevel and does the angle change as the planking continues?

It looks like very small differences in the tapering build up as you go along. The difference is so small that I think you could probably make the correction with the next plank so they match on both side and you wouldn't even be able to notice it when the planking is completed. I've never planked a hull using tick marks and this method of tapering each plank but I am going to try it out soon. I've just kind of done my own thing and worked with the planks until I got them to fit pretty well but without a defined method. Do you only taper the top edge of the plank and then leave the bottom edge entirely straight? Have you had to chamfer the top edge of the planks to help avoid any gaps between the the planks? If you do chamfer, do you chamfer the entire length of the plank or just chamfer the length of the section of the plank where the gap is?

Well that's a bummer about the primer. I think you will have to remove the primer and prime it again with a different product. Unfortunately, I'm not that familiar with primers for plastic so, hopefully, some of the plastic modelers here will offer some advice. I've had paint compatibility problems before where I had to remove the paint and start over. It's a pain but it was necessary. Good luck!
