  1. I'm onboard, Mark, and I'm looking forward to watching build this beauty. I'm seriously thinking I may need to get this model when Chris has another batch ready.
  2. You've been asking me about when I was starting my Flirt build. Well, I've been procrastinating because I've been salivating over the Sphinx. We live in a small house and there isn't much room for many large models so I've been thinking that maybe I should try and sell the Flirt and get the Sphinx when Chris has the second batch ready. With models like these that take a lot of time and commitment, I really need to love it and want to build it badly and the Sphinx keeps attracting my attention. The Flirt would be great practice for me before tackling the Sphinx but the Vanguard instructions are so good that I think I could probably do ok building it. It would be my first model with guns and ratlines and lots of square masted rigging but I'm game for it and there are several good build logs already going on the Sphinx which would be very helpful. I'll try and finish my Pen Duick currently and continue to mull over my dilemma: Flrt or Sphinx?
  3. Great planking as usual, Glenn. You've practically got this skill mastered and it will pay dividends for you when you build the Winnie.
  4. Great idea. Do you drill the hole just so the pins go in easier? Could you just push the pins into the first planking?
  5. Nice, Mark. I look forward to following your Sphinx build. I really want to build the Sphinx also.
  6. CA works well on small cuts and flappers. I had a small slit on the end of my finger that I kept breaking open and it was staying quite sore. My niece, who is an ER nurse, put some CA on it and, after a week or so, it was healed up. I ask her what happens to the CA and she said that it just gets pushed out as the cut heals. I've used it several times for these little, bothersome cuts and flappers and it does the job.
  7. What are "Finger sanders," BE? Nice work area...you have some elbow room!
  8. Interesting build. I've never seen this model before. I'll be following along since I would like to build an RC model someday and I'm clueless about them. Good luck! Oh, a good IPA always helps me along as well!
  9. i love these small working boats. Good luck on your build!
  10. This technique of using diluted PVA and brushing around joints is new to me. I've never done that before. I've always just carefully applied glue to the the slots in the joints and then wiped off any excess glue that squeezed out if necessary. Is brushing diluted PVA into joints after the parts are fitted together a preferred method? Do you get a better fit for the parts when you don't place glue in the slots? Does the brushing diluted PVA method make as joint just as strong or stronger than putting glue in the slots first?
  11. Thanks, Glenn. I'm not sure I completely visualize it without having the parts in my hands but it gives me a good resource to help guide me along at some point.
  12. Great build log, Glenn! How did you determine the amount of material to be removed that you marked before sanding?
  13. I just read through your build. Very nice work, Thukydides! I'll follow along too.
  14. You're off and running, Glenn! I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who works at a small desk too.
  15. The colors are wonderful. It's really nice to see these colorful, little boats with their beautiful sails. Nice job!
  16. I just read over your build log and you are doing a great job on this interesting, ancient galley and your name for her is hilarious! Most of us have struggled with inadequate instructions and it can be frustrating but you are certainly overcoming the difficulties very well. If you do decide to build a Vanguard model, you'll be amazed at how good the instructions are. They are like night and day compared to the instructions from many model companies. I think Chris Watton has set the new standard for excellent instructions. Good luck on the rest of your build!
  17. Welcome to this wonderful forum, Antyronnen! The black and white photos of your award winning model are great. I think black and white suits this ancient boat very well. It sounds like you have had a very interesting and fulfilling life and I'm sure you'll get a lot of pleasure building this model again years later. I built small plastic models as a kid and then, like you, life's journey took over. I built my first wooden boat model, the Batelina by Maris Stella, 3 years ago at the age of 71 and I've been hooked ever since. Enjoy and welcome aboard!
