If you are building two half hulls then gluing them togther the tricky part would be connecting them. Unless I am not following your build properly. David B

To paint or not to paint, that is the question?
dgbot replied to ratskiss's topic in Wood ship model kits
Painting a ship to me is a matter of taste and what you are building. Several years ago at Manitowoc I saw two models of the same vessel. Both were well done. The only difference was that one was painted and the other modeler used different woods and stains. After talking with both of them I got the sense that one was an artist and the other was a woodworker and both used the model to show off their skills. As for the painted one the layers were not that thick so you could see the planking and the joinery. David B- 11 replies

Question Druxey. After you complete the other half how will you be able to attach the two and make them look whole? Many years ago Dana McCalip, my mentor asked me to build two half hulls and then combine them and the end result did not look very good. David B

Elijah I was the secretary as well as the photographer for the newsletter. I always enjoyed the meetings and learned many things about ship modeling and maritime history. Also how to work with airbrushes metal working and soldering. Next time you visit your grandmother give me a heads up. I would be happy to meet you and answer any questions you have. David B

Not a taboo but certain common sense rules so that there are no legal or ethical problems down the road. There is an area for taking photographs, techniques etc. I have gone through it many times and it has helped me tremendously. David B

You did a fantastic job Tim. What is good about this boat was that it could be modified for different missions. To bad the Navy got rid of all of them after the war. I was at a show several years ago and at one of the tables I think I saw ten models of the 80' and each had been modified for a different purpose. This following page can give you more info on what I am talking about. David B

Let me pull out may magnifying glass. Nice way to connect that part to the rudder. Will you be able to simulate the rudder hinges or will they be to small to see. David B

I am happy you are finally getting your headache taken care of. As for the plywood be careful that it does not delaminate on you. Have you experimented with 1/64 mahogany or bass? David B

Buck, I have been able to save pages in PDF format. I am using Chrome and my printer. with Windows 7. I do is have my browser print the page. A window appears activating my printer and change to setting to save as Pdf. I am using a HP Envy 7640. If you try it this way you might be able to save the page. I think it would depend on your printers software. David B

I have seen this stamping done using a hard roller on the tape. This technique worked. I have also seen one modeler make a small press to get the pattern he wanted. Unfortunately I was not able to take any photos. It also depends on the scale you are working at. Once your model is in a case will they be seen? David B

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
