There is a lot of truth to that! This is a single planked Hull reducing the wiggle room some. I do have to add another layer to the wale; I’ll have to see if fiddling with that layer improves things. If not c’est la vie.

I really like the swap of basswood for cherry; I’ve been very concerned about denting the basswood in my build (had a few dents that were tricky to remove. You’ve also shown me that I probably do need a thickness sander if I venture into scratch builds, which is good to know.

Thanks for checking in and I look forward to seeing how yours comes together when you get there. I keep looking at the exemplar build and I’m starting to think I initially placed the counter slightly off and then didn’t fair it quite as well as I should have. The directions seemed vague to me at the time for how exactly to place that part. Oh you’re too modest, but thank you!

I've been neglecting this log for a little while mainly because I've had a lack of motivation (which is mainly my fault) and I'm hoping this bump of a post will help encourage me to get on with the show. I'll confess that as my planking progressed it became obvious (to me at least) that I didn't fair the frame well in spots. The real solution would be to tear down and start again, but this is a learning experience for me and I don't see myself finishing the build going down that path with this tutorial. However you better believe that I'll be doing a lot of checking to make certain I'm confident in my fairing next time I start to plank a hull - there is no covering it up with a single planked model. With that said - onward to the current state of the build. She really doesn't look too shabby from this angle. Not quite as smooth as it could be from here however. I also don't feel like I did a great job with how the wale and the counter met, but I'm not really certain what I did wrong (or if anyone can tell from the picture). Any insight there to take forward with me would be much appreciated.

You probably want some sandpaper of various grits and potentially a metal ruler. Do they have the instructions online? It might be helpful to read through them if possibly and see what is suggested or what might help with certain steps.

Edit: Sold I recently picked up a complete set of the Fully Framed Model, but I already own Volumes I and IV so these need to be rehomed. Volume 1 is signed, but I'm not 100% certain if it is by David Antscherl or not (I'd honestly love to get him to sign my series if I ever run into him though). A few observations: Volume I appears to have some damage to a few pages and if I stick my nose to those pages it has a smell (maybe smoke?) and there are some notes written in pencil in the Volume I. Volume IV appears to be basically untouched and has rigging printouts in the rear flap. I will sell them both for $70 or Volume I for $35 and Volume IV for $45. Shipping is included in the US and would need to be determined for anywhere else.

Different modeling blocks are made from different types of wood. The wood that your blocks are made from made be softer and can’t handle the same pressure other woods can. Let me check if I have any extra 3mm blocks laying around - how many do you need to replace? (Side note and this may not bother you but they probably will look different from the blocks you are currently using).

There are some examples of this in Ship Modeling Simplified by Mastini that might help.

Looks great! I’m looking forward to seeing the display when you finish. Be careful at this rate you’re going to burn through your model stash and need another 1:1 build 😁.

I’m not an expert so take this advice with a grain of salt. I am working on the NRG Half Hull and the instructions show the wale tapering into the rabbet as described here (post 52): Could that be an option?

Very useful tips, if I ever finish up my Half Hull I think I’m going to give one of my card models a try.

If you do hit a major problem be encouraged that you're in good company; I lost sleep (to put it mildly) over my first try at planking the hull on my Alert (detailed in my log). This forum is a great resource to help get you over the hump of whatever seemingly insurmountable obstacle you encounter.

Congratulations, she’s a gorgeous build! Really enjoyed following along and I’ve learned a lot (…now if I’ll be able to recall it when I need it that will be the true test 😁).

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
