  1. Don’t feel bad about the time it takes, Edward. I’ve been working on my planking for several months. I remember that a Chuck said not to rush and it should take six months.
  2. That looks great, Peter. It's really cool that you have pictures of the real thing to compare to and make it as true to life as possible.
  3. Beautiful work, Scott! I really like how your furled sails look. It’s an amazing looking model and I think it’s neat that you can drive six hours and go see the real thing.
  4. Welcome aboard, Lars. Your Beagle is looking great! This is one I'd like to build some time down the road. I recommend posting an introduction in the New Member forum. Also, in your profile you can modify your signature to add a link to your build log that will help people find it from anywhere that you post on the site. Good luck, and I hope you enjoy MSW.
  5. Peter, it’s good to see your post, my friend. I hope you’ve been well. Your chain plates look great!
  6. I hear you. But it’s easy to say something looks really good, even when you don’t know much about how it was done. I’m still pretty new myself, with a lot to learn. My biggest problem with this website is that it makes me want to build about a hundred more ship models.
  7. Hi John. When you say “sanding is out because of the graphite”, I’m not sure what task you’re working on. If you’re talking about pencil on the plank edges, I’ve sanded mine and it works out great. I assume you’re concerned about spreading graphite all over the planks. That doesn’t happen in my experience. Feel free to take a look at my build logs. You can see that I sanded the crap out of Winnie’s starboard side and I sanded plenty on the deck of the Virginia. I hope that’s helpful.
  8. The bulkheads are completely enclosed now. How cool is that? It looks fantastic, Rusty!
  9. Hi Jon. My first ship model was the Virginia 1819 by Artesania Latina. There are a lot of build logs for it and many of us did it as a first wooden ship model. It has the big advantage of being double planked, which makes it much easier to get a good looking hull. If you read through those build logs, you’ll see that it takes six months to a year to build. So keep that in mind with your gifting plan. Whatever you choose, read as many build logs for that kit as you can find. I would never have finished without the things I learned on this site.
  10. I know how you feel, Bob. I never get enough time to spend on Winnie and I think about her all the time. Your work is beautiful! This looks like really fun work to do.
  11. It looks really nice, Travis. You’ve added some neat extras that really make it something special.
  12. Thanks, Edward. I hope things are getting better for you wrt the pandemic. Thanks also for the likes. The more I look at it, the happier I am with the starboard planking. I think I was only seeing the flaws at first. But picturing more progress in my mind, I think it will come out pretty nice.
  13. Great review, James. This is definitely on my wishlist for several builds down the road.
  14. Those look gorgeous, John. I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with arthritis. It must be frustrating.
  15. I’ve finished planking the starboard side. This is the second hull I've planked and my first attempt at single planking. So I’m pretty happy with it. That said, there are several mistakes that will be obvious to this group. I had to take off and redo several pieces in the first belt near the stern because I had not faired bulkheads 27 and 28 enough. The bend at that spot kept getting worse the closer I got to the stern post. I have given thought to shelving the project, but I can’t do it. I really want to finish it. I the worst case, I’ll feel compelled to build another copy down the road.
  16. It looks great, Chris. That sail looks really nice. Did it come with the kit or did you scratch build it?
  17. I had no idea you could use blackening solution on the white metal in kits like this. I thought it only worked on brass. I'm glad to know this for next time.
