The bulkheads are completely enclosed now. How cool is that? It looks fantastic, Rusty!

Hi Jon. My first ship model was the Virginia 1819 by Artesania Latina. There are a lot of build logs for it and many of us did it as a first wooden ship model. It has the big advantage of being double planked, which makes it much easier to get a good looking hull. If you read through those build logs, you’ll see that it takes six months to a year to build. So keep that in mind with your gifting plan. Whatever you choose, read as many build logs for that kit as you can find. I would never have finished without the things I learned on this site.

Great review, James. This is definitely on my wishlist for several builds down the road.

Those look gorgeous, John. I’m sorry you’ve been struggling with arthritis. It must be frustrating.

I’ve finished planking the starboard side. This is the second hull I've planked and my first attempt at single planking. So I’m pretty happy with it. That said, there are several mistakes that will be obvious to this group. I had to take off and redo several pieces in the first belt near the stern because I had not faired bulkheads 27 and 28 enough. The bend at that spot kept getting worse the closer I got to the stern post. I have given thought to shelving the project, but I can’t do it. I really want to finish it. I the worst case, I’ll feel compelled to build another copy down the road.

It looks great, Chris. That sail looks really nice. Did it come with the kit or did you scratch build it?

Your anchors turned out great! The chains are a nice change from the kit.

I haven’t built the Syren, but I’m pretty sure this section of decking will be under a grate and not very visible. If you want a different look on the rest of the decking, you will be the only one who knows this looks different. I usually test finish options on a small sample build-up so I know what it will look like before I commit it to the model.

Really nice work on your rigging, Travis. I made sails for mine also, but didn’t do nearly as good of a job. Yours look terrific!

2021 NRG CONFERENCE
Matt D replied to kurtvd19's topic in NAUTICAL RESEARCH GUILD - News & Information
I have to post this, Kurt. This is me swimming in Lake Superior earlier today! And I’m still alive. It was cold by a lot of people’s standards. -
This kit looks incredible! I'm going to follow and I look forward to seeing this beauty come together. Thanks for sharing it with us.

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
