Now, I have finally placed the old girl on its Jarra Base, (which I have wrapped in plastic to save drips..

 

Next is the flagstaff's, which I have to add next as the rest of the rigging requires doing before the railings.

 

After the placing of lots of turnbuckles for belaying points, I have added the awning and hammock lines. I also rigged the coaling derricks on the main mast.

 

Finally, in the back ground to my desk is a photo I took at dawn back last century from the HMAS Bendigo   of a tramp ship that had just deposited 300Kg's of Heroin on our fair shores. It didn't get away.

Things should move along quickly now. This is the first time I've actually used rails for a ship, as I usually do individual stanchions.

Hi Greg, I am constantly amazed with each log update how much detail you cram into such a small scale!  The picture with it next to the desk lamp gave the game away, I could swear looking at the other detail shots it was at least 2 to 3 times bigger than it actually is!

 

Whats your  preference with doing the rails individually or as bought?

The Pontos rails were very nice, so why not, as they have very nice braces. The next one will be individual stanchions again.

Zvezda do the Borodino in 1:350 and believe there is also photo-etch and wood decks available for that.

 

Also I believe Trumpeter is doing or have done the Mikasa in 1:200 scale and Pontos are currently working on an advanced photo-etch set for it.  That combo is going to be a big temptation for me!

 

I think Tamiya have also recently released a re-tooled Yamato in 1:350 so that would be a fair undertaking with the PE.

Personally, I am very interested in seeing a good Yamato build. I am sure whatever you decide to tackle next will be fun to watch in any event. Have thoroughly enjoyed your build of the Dreadnought.

If you go for Tamiya's Yamato, watch out for the differences in PE there are some which look like the new, but are for the old tool, and vice versa. Also a rather large price difference in the PE versions. I saw one for the old tool at AUS$ 300+ whilst the new one was around AUS$160 (both Pontos) Furthermore, the Pontos PE has far more parts than some others I've seen.

How about Trumpy's 1/350  HMS Belfast?  That kit also has some excellent brass by flyhawk pontos etc,  It also a current ship and well worth a visit in London.

Moving along, Pontos has a fairly elaborate set up for the torpedo nets. The AOTS book shows the rigging lines for them, which I shall now have to interpret to get correct.

 

The shelves on the gunwales hold the nets when stowed, but as they will be deployed, they stand out and are frustrating to place.

 

I have added the eyelets for the booms and the boat booms.

 

Finally the net davits, from which I will run the onboard rigging first before I set the booms and nets, again working inboard to outboard, then I can add the awning stanchions, the davits the last of the rigging and the flags, and the ships cats, before the final stage of adding the booms and nets.

Should be a nice one. (Although, it is new, sothere won't be any after,arket...)

With these pictures she looks much bigger, compared to the shot on your table top (previous post #248), and still you cram her full of details ... magnificent, I've had a look at the IJN Musashi (1/350) I've got waiting for comparison ... I wonder how I will fare with my big fat clumsy fingers. You are doing an outstanding job ...

Those detail pieces from Pontos look amazing. I am assuming that's where many of the pieces on the deck come from. If so, it makes that set well worth the investment no matter how intimidating it looks in the box. My set for the Essex aircraft carrier is intimidating for sure. When I start it, I am going to remember what you said...tackle it like you're eating an elephant, one bite at a time.

Amazingly I've had to add lots of extras as well, both the pontos & Flyhawk upgrade sets, extra doors, rigging pieces, spares from other frets. I'm not good enough to scratch build at this scale.

Hey Greg...after discussing which ship you are going to build next, I broke down and ordered a 1:350 Yamato. A shop in Japan sold me one of the new mold Yamato kits for $160 plus postage. That brought it to about $240 total, the best price I could find. So I guess at least I'll want a Pontos set, but looking them over, it seems they offer several or more sets that include different details. I wonder if there is a complete set for that ship?

Found most of the PE sets in that neighbourhood. I usually look on ebay.com/co.uk/de one never knows if and where you can grab a bargain. Often cheaper even including shipping & handling The same bloke has a set for the old tool (AU$340)

I have not found anyone else stupid enough to do this method yet at this scale. I have lines running everywhere down the sides of the ship that will eventually be attached to the torpedo nets.

 

Running alongside the hull you will notice a wire, rigged through eyelets, there are two turnbuckles attached for each boom to the wire. I had to use wire as the elastic rope will stretch away from the hull and look silly (or uneven, same thing).

I have not found anyone else stupid enough to do this method yet at this scale. I have lines running everywhere down the sides of the ship that will eventually be attached to the torpedo nets.

 

Running alongside the hull you will notice a wire, rigged through eyelets, there are two turnbuckles attached for each boom to the wire. I had to use wire as the elastic rope will stretch away from the hull and look silly (or uneven, same thing).

Thanks gents, I'll leave the talented to the scratch builders, I have several of Jean Boudriot's books (who recently passed), that is talent.

 

I use Tamiya rattle cans mostly for the big stuff, then washes and drybrushing. My next project is huge and I think the time has come to buy an airbrush.
