Follow up to the 'Condor' painting.
HMS Wanderer lowers her Seaboat to pickup Lt Robert H Everett RNVR, after he had been catapulted off Maplin (Catapult Fighter Ship). He had just shot down a Fock Wulf FW 200 Condor. Well out from land, he had to ditch his aircraft near a ship in the convoy. This was the first success by an a/c operating from a Catapult equipped Merchant ship. At the time Maplin was being operated by the RN as a Catapult Fighter Ship, so I suppose technically she was a warship. However this setup developed into the Catapult armed Merchant ship, followed by the Merchant Aircraft Carrier, and finally the Escort Carrier.

Jim,

Cracking set of pictures. I like the fact they are watercolours. I like to see the simple parts of a picture that give it meaning. So i look for things like the portholes, masts and rigging that add to the detail and you have them down to a fine art. . The water details are very good.

The speed you paint at is unreal. Looking forward to seeing more.

New Bedford Whaleboat build. Kit by Model Shipways

I've been making progress on my model and according to the instruction booklet I should be painting it, at least parts of it.

Are acrylic's ok ? I did apply a sanding sealer. but I want to stain the untreated floor boards which are walnut.

Thanks

Hi Jim

I thoroughly enjoy and look forward to each installment of your paintings. Your range of subjects and sea conditions is astounding.

Your picture of the 'Oronsay" in Alaska is exactly what it looks like when you take a cruise ship up Glacier Bay. I did it a few years ago and you really do get that close to the glacier before you turn around, and some of the icebergs are a deep beautiful blue green color that makes each one unique.

Didn't see any Orcas, though I have seen them a few times over the years following the ferries here in Puget Sound where I live. One time it was what appeared to be a mother with a youngster and a quite small calf. I would swear she was taking them on a sight seeing tour of the "people" on the big boat just as we would take out kids to the zoo. They followed the ferry all the way into the harbor and did not turn back out into open water until the ferry started to slow down for the docks.

Looking forward to your next installment.

Jim...your work is masterful.  You have control of the depth of field and a good grasp of scale and keeping the ships dimensions correct.

I love your grasp of shadow and the ease of the seas roll and elusion of depth.  Very nice.  This is water color..so you show a very competent  application of color...overlapping, and control of hue.  I struggled with controlling the natural flow of the color to bleed into other colors...you masterfully controlled your medium.

Do you begin with light colors and move to darker or are you introducing acrylic to highlight the darker watercolors?

Very impressive work.  I love your water...my favorite are the sailing ships...but any good ship representation(within historical context)is my favorite.
