HMS Winchelsea 1764 by Rustyj - FINISHED - 1:48

Nice progress, Rusty. The poly really brings out those deck colors. I'm curious though if there was a reason for your not painting the QD clamp.

I'll give you the same answer I used to give my dad when I was a teenager and I quote,

"Ummm, ahhhh, welllllllll, maybe, I don't know." That should about cover it.

Thanks Mark and Sjors. Sjors I've been following your Flirt and you're doing a great job on her! Also thanks for the likes.

On to planking the deck. I planked her using pear wood. No big surprises, just follow Chucks directions! ;)

Here you can see the start of laying the first center line plank and the the filling in between the hatches etc.

Then came the tabs around the hatches. You can see how I started figuring the cuts and just kept making small cuts and sanding until a tight fit was obtained. More pieces than I care to count went into the waste bin!

Here all the tabs have been completed. Planking the remaining deck came next.

Thanks Vladimir,

The hull and deck are planked in pear wood. Very similar to cherry.

Hi JJ. If I didn't have the pear I definitely would have done it in cherry. I've used some of Chucks laser cut cherry parts and they blend right in.

I hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday!

I've started making some of the gun port lids.

I first set the two 1/4" wide pieces and shaped them to fit the opening.

DSC00202.thumb.JPG.df9cec4d8a7ee459a05df1b38da45ae2.JPG

I then added the bottom piece and sanded it to fit.

DSC00203.thumb.JPG.e206ad32f5ee10aaf30c97d80df5c8d9.JPG

Then the top piece was added and sanded to fit.

DSC00217.thumb.JPG.decebfdcf0fb2dd5ad2c10c286a4a712.JPGDSC00208.thumb.JPG.2bcfe20a5b289d09b0302b30a22cafe1.JPGDSC00212.thumb.JPG.62ab808b8da69cac97ca4bacfa0bddbe.JPG

For me doing it this way was easier than making the whole lid and then trying to sand the whole thing to fit.

It took about two hours from start to finish. One down nine more to go. Then it's on to making the hinges! :)

Oh the time spent on making these diminuitive parts. Have we all lost our minds? Half kidding and half serious. I do think that such dedication and craftmanship does rival some of the best works of the time. I do hope they are appreciated long after we have "pushed off shore". Great work Rusty.

Hi All,

My chapter 5 Cherry parts arrived a while ago and I've found sometime to get back at the Winnie.

Though Chuck supplied a superb laser cut rudder I tried my hand at cutting one out of pear on

my scroll saw. I'm pleased with the way it came out so I will be using it.

Here it is assembled waiting to be tapered on the aft side towards the bottom. It needs to end up

around 5/32" wide. I marked it off and you can see one side sanded to the correct thickness.

DSC00196.thumb.JPG.7e0f92f91d66f40fa73807182dbfd3f6.JPGDSC00380.thumb.JPG.e4b3bc8a9a5a8a551b4496cb4854a773.JPG

These are the boxwood laser cut pintels and gudgeons. They were added to the rudder along with the straps

and 20# monofilament to simulate the bolts.

DSC00382.thumb.JPG.dfbb9cf347b1f51805b596a839b28235.JPGDSC00389.thumb.JPG.21dfe373c24034c939567259906ee9d6.JPG

Next I'll have to flip the hull over and, gasp, cut the rudder port in the lower counter and hang the rudder.

Nothing can go wrong doing that can it?!

Thanks Steve. It felt great getting to work on her again.

Hi Matt, Not too afraid of turning her over though a spotter isn't a bad idea. :)

It's cutting the hole in the lower counter that has me spooked the most!

Also thanks for the likes!

That’s some fine cutting on the scroll saw, I couldn’t get remotely close doing that.

Best of luck turning her over, or maybe you can lay on the ground and work up from the bottom 🤣😁

Glenn

Oh, don't worry about it - it's only 19 months worth of work to make another!

Looking back over your photos, I want to tell you that your moldings along the sides look spectacular.  That pear along with your excellent shaping work really look good to me.

Ok I can breath a little easier. I flipped her over cut the hole mounted the rudder and no dropsies. :)

As per the instructions the pintels and gudgeons were added, sanded thinner and the the bolts simulated

with 20lb monofilament though once everything was painted black they are hard to see in the pictures.

Beautiful Rusty.  I love the color and how the golden parts of the frieze pucks up the color of the carved elements .  It all came together well.

Thanks Greg.

For me I would do it at Chapter 5. It wasn't hard at all to do and I'd worry about putting the frieze on with the hole there.

Pear really is a beautiful wood, Rusty. It was used in contemporary ship models a lot more than we think about.

Just curious about the size of the rudder opening. Seems a bit small (in the photo view). If your rudder were functional would you be able to swing it to it's proper angle?
