Hello everyone:

Got a little shop time the last few days and was able to get the rudder finished and installed.  It was pretty straight forward.  I also only used 2 pins in the top & bottom hinge.  It is still removable & I will probably do that so I don't damage it down the road.  I tend to be pretty good at that.....

I used a 1/4" stick to hold the hinges to thin them down.  It was easier of me to do it off the ship and get them painted before installing them.  Again, this was to save possible damage to the hull.  One side is shown thinned below....

After that of course was the rudder trunk and benches.  All of that was pretty easy thanks to Chucks talent with the laser cutter.  And the lower window trim was simple enough, just a lot of trial & fitting.

Up next are the gun port covers and hinges.  Something tells me I'll have a lot of trial & error with those before I'm satisfied.  👍

Hi Steve. Removing the rudder is a really good idea. I didn't - and in a careless moment, pulling the boat towards me, I heard a crunch and ended up with the rudder in my hands. Fortunately Chuck is sending me replacement hinges along with my chapter 7 parts but I wish I'd been more careful.

All the best

Fred

Hello everyone.  Just another update as I see it's been a while.  As in way over due.  Anyway I'm still here and moving along but at a snails pace it seems.

I have finished up Chapter 5 with the exception of attaching some of the cannon lids.

I also have all of the cannon built up & ready to go.

I have a small start of Chapter 7.  The forward walls are not attached yet as they still need a little work.

This is where I am as of now.  I have to thank everyone that has gone way ahead of me as it really helps with a lot of the little things.

Hope everyone is keeping warm....

Steve, beautiful work. As I observe it closely I particularly like how you treated figurehead and stern ornamentals with little more toned down shade - exactly same shade what I need for my winnie. would you mind sharing your "recipe" for how you painted them? are they wood or resin? Thank you in advance Vlad

Thanks for the comments Frank.  Your doing some beautiful work on your build also.  Looks fantastic!!!!

Vlad

Thank you.....

The ornaments are the resin ones.  I just used a wood stain.  Try some different shades on the back side to find something you like.  I just brushed it on, let it set for a bit, then brushed them off with a clean soft brush to remove any excess.

Mine are a little more 'orange' than I was looking for but they are growing on me.  The pics were before any Wipe On Poly.  Looks a little better now. 😉

Moving on -- I have finished up Chapter 7 today.

A couple of pictures are below that show the current state of affairs.

There were a lot of little parts to this Chapter and a lot of detail in those pumps & handles but I think everything turned out OK.

Now its time to fix up a few little details, do a little clean up, and read Chapter 8 again.

Hello everyone:

It has been a long time since my las update - almost 6 months.  Been pretty busy with life and a few other things.

I have managed to get in some shop time lately and thought I would let you all know I'm still plugging away.

I have finished up Chapter 9 (still a couple things to add) and have a small start on Chapter 10.  The planking on the sides of the fore deck proved to be quite a challenge.

Below are some pictures to show my current state of the Winnie...

And my beginning of Chapter 10.....

Hopefully it won't be 6 months before I have another update.

Be safe everyone....

Here are some pictures of my Chapter 10 work.  It is pretty much finished except the eye bolts along the rails.  I have all the holes drilled but need to make more eye bolts & rings.  I have not done the ships wheel yet as I forgot to order it with the Chapter so will probably wait till Chapter 12 is available & get that done then. I also need the chain plates, etc, for Chapter 11.

None of the cannons are attached yet.  They are pretty glossy so I might dull them down a bit.  I think I will put the emblems on the Binnacle but leave it natural color.  Also leave the capstan natural - I couldn't bring myself to paint it.....

Pretty good progress for the last 3 weeks.   Till next time.....

This is some really nice work, not only the model, also the photography. Well done on both!

What is your method on removing char from the cannon trucks, they look great?

Thanks everyone for the great comments.  Not sure I deserve them but we are our own worst critics I think.

I just used a small sanding stick very much like a finger nail file.  They were a little time consuming but most of them turned out pretty good.

Wow - I can't believe it has been almost a whole year since my last update.  Mostly because I have been in Florida all winter while the ship has been chillin in Michigan.

Anyway, I have been back in the shop for a while and am in the process of finishing up Chapter 11.  While not done yet it is pretty close.

Some photos of the current state of affairs is below.

Finished up the gangways & ladders.  It was nice to finish up the inside details

20230709_174129.jpg.40abb160ae0801cb8187ea7f3ef5b65c.jpg

I have to finish attaching the chain links, the fenders & steps and clean up the nail heads & some other little details.  Then I'll be moving on to Chapter 12 in a while.

Looking forward to that....

Steve

Just a short update since I am officially done with Chapter 11.  I am still debating about adding the swivel gun but they are easily added later.
