18th Century Longboat by Shaz (Robbyn) - FINISHED - Model Shipways

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the suggestions, soaking the brass in vinegar, and then switching to acrylic paint seemed to work well. With today being a holiday the local gun shop is closed, but I will be there tomorrow to get some bluing for in the future. At least with the longboat there are only a few tiny parts to worry about painting. However, I am sure I will want to blacken rather than paint the brass for the Syren.

Got the pedestals made, and holes drilled into the keel.

The hull is all done, now it is time for the masts and the rigging.

Sorry, it will have to wait a bit. Off to Colorado in the morning for 4 days of R&R.

I took a long break from the longboat while I went back to the rigging of my SFII, now that build is in dry dock awaiting parts so I am back to the longboat.

Worked on the mast this week, got it cut and tapered, and the sheaves drilled in it

Then went to work on the "iron" bands. This was only my 2nd attempt at soldering, I originally bade the bands and tried using CA, but I worried, from previous experience, that the glue would not hold up to the pressure of the lines so I decided to remake them and solder them together.

"raw" soldered bands

post-127-0-23090100-1382206293_thumb.jpg

I then drilled the holes needed in the bands, cut them to size and tried my hand at blackening them...I think they turned out pretty darn good for me

post-127-0-89546000-1382206304_thumb.jpg

Next was painting the mast

post-127-0-48906300-1382206314_thumb.jpg

I also spent time this week, getting the longboat mounted on the pedestals and making sure it was level

post-127-0-61522800-1382206326_thumb.jpg

The mast step I fashioned...probably cant tell from the photo but I did NOT want the mast just glued to the top of the step, and I feared a tenon would still not be structurally sound enough, so my step is a bit thicker than 1/16 and I drilled a hole through the center so my mast sits down inside the step. I feel this will give it better stability when I start pulling rope through it it and placing pressure on it.

Robbyn, your metal work is looking great, along with the build--very nice!  Don't blame you for dry docking your SFII for a while--not only the parts issues but the kit in general sounds...like time for a break.  After my AL build, I knew I'd never do another one of their kits because of the issues I encountered--many were similar to yours.  Guess that was part of the learning process, too! :P

Looks like I was right, the SF has made you a better modeller hasn't it?

Always remember, because of the lousy instructions and missing steps etc you have learned so much from her.

I think we all have "blonde moments".  Some of us are just able to cover the faux pas before we're found out.

Finally a small bit of progress. I did what I said and graded all day yesterday so i could build today. Got my mast turned around in the right direction, then fashioned the bowsprit and its ironwork

post-127-0-91233500-1382921793_thumb.jpg

Made the boom, and the iron work and block

post-127-0-37199500-1382921806_thumb.jpg

am currently working on the gaff, talk about a b******, had no problem with the first side, but took me 4 tries to get the other half, tiny little piece kept breaking on me.

It needs considerable work yet, but I want the glue to harden before I start sanding and filing it into shape

Hey Robbyn, looking good my dear.

I notice you are getting your head around the terminology too.

You have gone from "string" " thingy" etc to bowsprit, boom, block and the word we all come to know, B***** !!

Ok, I am stumped and need some help. I am rigging the gaff, no problem with rigging the peak halyard, that went fairly smoothly. The throat halyard instructions are where my questions is. I can seize the rope to the eyebolt, then I am supposed to take the running end through the lowest of the simulated sheaves. My question is this, the sheave has two holes drilled in it, but what I am seeing on the rigging plan is that I take the running end through one hole, out the other side and down to the belaying pin. Is this correct? I would think i need to make use of the second hole in the sheave as well, but don't get how to accurately do this. Does anyone have a drawing they could share on this?

Robbyn, things are looking great!  About the gaff:  Run your halyard through the top hole and then down to the pin.  Imagine a pulley wheel is in-between the top and bottom holes:  if you run the line through the bottom hole, it will, or could, jam the pulley wheel from turning plus mess up the leverage; therefore, you don't want to run your line back through the bottom hole.  While I don't have a pic. of a sheave to post for you, here's a good approximation for the visual:

Hope that helps!

Jay
