Wow, those are wickedly detailed parts. The rivet detail, however, looks very much overdone to me but may well look alright 'in the flesh'.

I might try some of those AA guns and rocket launchers for my Hood though delivery times and customs can be a hassle. I've just finished 8 (only 7 are actually needed) 5,5 inch secondary armament guns in the standard FH plastic but it would be interesting to see if the move to 3D is worth it and indeed if they fit where they're supposed to fit!

The funnels are insane!  Too bad he hasn't done IJN ships in this scale.  All my 1/700 kits are IJN.

It goes without saying, this guy has his 3D printer dialed in. It's also important to know this is probably a CAD rendering and not the actual part, but from other of the actual pieces I've seen, they are very very good. RGL's example of 1:350 pom pom's are extraordinary.

There are quite a lot of details that remain to be completed before it's finished. I will also apply the rigging and flags to this one before finished.

Anchors, chains, boats, aircraft, davits, railings, etc. More AA guns, too.

If I'd bothered to look below the waterline I'd have seen that she's still missing her propellers!

There is so much detail that needs attention in these kits and it's all so time consuming. I'm not looking forward to all the staircases and ladders, rigging and railings and there are no less than 50 microscopic brass mushroom vents in 3 different sizes, some barely 1mm in height and a fraction of that in diameter, they look like an army of ants in a plastic bag! Some I can probably glue in place before I paint the steel deck parts but most are on the wooden deck so will need to be painted first - haven't worked out how yet!

 

 

I've a very long way to go until I arrive at the stage you've reached, but I think it will be rewarding to see how she looks as she nears completion - even if there is a wealth of detail still to be addressed. Seeing your model approaching completion must provide motivation for you as you tackle the final stages I should imagine.

I usually wait until the end to add the propellers. Keeps me from knocking them off and losing them.

Thanks Alan. I just hope the PE on the masts hold up with the rigging later on. They are flimsy.

I did not realize until reading about it today, that the Prinz Eugen was used in the nuclear bomb test at Bikini Island and actually survived the blast.

Holy cow, she must have been a very well built ship! Also saw where one of her props was salvaged later on after the test and is on display in Germany. Wonder how long something like that would have remained radio-active?

Yep, and so were USS Saratoga and IJN Nagato. Personally, I think all three of them would have been priceless museum ships, especially Saratoga.

Very interesting. Never read up on this part of history until now.

A friend of mine's dad was a ship captain during these tests. He, along with many other sailors whose ships were "supposed" to be a safe distance from the blast, later developed cancer and died as a result of exposure to radiation. The Navy would never acknowledge any responsibility for their deaths or provide financial assistance. Sad.

Radiation was still a novelty back in those days. The military did a lot of wacky things with nuclear tests back then that make little sense based on what we know now.
