I like the Hobbylite stuff myself better than the Elmer's. With the Elmer's I feel that it leaves a residue on the surfaces around what you're filling unless you are perfect at only applying it to just the hole. Just my two cents...

BEN-   yup, thanks to you (and indirectly Rusty), put in some support up there.  Think I'll play with the beakhead planking before I hit the gunports.  Got a couple of days of 'real life' rearing it's ugly head coming up.

  Sorry for the Go Back, but what support are you guys talking about? just some scrap to support the fwd edge of the false deck behind bulkhead G or what? Thanks,

Haven't gotten to Jeff's wood yet John.  There will still be a lot of ME basswood on board.

 

Yes, the Hobbylite comes in either white or a wood color.  Available around here in most hobby stores.  One nice feature is that you can just add water and get any consistency you want.  And if you let it dry out in the jar you can always reconstitute it with water.  You can also add a few drops of an acrylic paint and get any color you want.  Best thing since sliced bread ......oh, wait, that was the pencil sander

You can get hobbylite from Tower Hobbies if you can't find a hobby store near you.  Really really great stuff!

Work on framing the gun ports on the main gun deck has begun. 

 

A temporary batten was used to check the position of the laser drawn lines on the bulkheads.  Only minor adjustment was needed to yield a nice sheer line.  Lines were scribed on the bulkheads and the battens removed.

 

A paper cannon was made using a copy of the 12 lb. cannon from the plans mounted on a 1/16" thick strip to simulate the actual deck.  This was used to check the height of the cannon above the sills.  This photo, using tape to demark the port lines, shows where we are:

 

 

Satisfied with this positioning, I proceeded to install the laser cut sills, port and starboard:

 

 

The sills were roughly faired with the bulkheads.

 

Now that the sills are in, the lintels should go fairly quickly.  I will simply be using a 3/8" spacer to set them in position.  Then come the uprights.

 

SJORS - in anticipation of your comment, yes.......the paper cannon fires 12 lb. cotton balls.  The final versions will handle good old American iron.

Looks great....Before you add the lintels...make sure you fill any cracks between the sills and the bulkheads.  Its easier to do that now.  Sand them smooth as if preparing them for paint now.  the lintels will make it harder as your space is limited even with a good sanding stick.  With the lintels...its not as crucial to fill the gaps so precisely as it will be on the underside and not seen.  But that doesnt mean you shouldnt give it a shot.

Okay....I looked at the unexpected serious answer from John,  then I looked at my comment. My neurons were apparently not firing when I typed that!!!

It should have read: I`m trying to imagine how large the cotton cannon balls would have to be in order to be 12 pounds!!

I suspected that might be happening  .  But John was right....  12 pounder is 4.4", 18 pounder just over 5".

You might be surprised to find out that cotton is 'heavier' then you think.  If you take all the air out and measure the true density it's about 1.55g/cc.  So if a gallon of water weighs approximately 8 pounds, a gallon of compressed cotton would weigh about 12 !

 

OK, a gallon of solid iron would weigh about 66 pounds.

 

And now ........ on with the lintels!!!!!

OK, Sherry, I think your 12 pound cotton wool cannon ball would have a diameter of about 2.6 feet, but it would, of course, depend on how much the cotton was compressed!
