Why is that Frank.  Are basements illegal in California?  I've heard almost everything out there is potentially hazardous to your health :D  :D:P  :D  :D

We lived in Lancaster Calf for 11 years, it's also hazardous to your wallet :D. :D. :D

Thanks for all the ........ thoughts!  Gee guys, it was only a few sticks :)

The mock cannon was not my idea...... it was Chuck's from the Syren kit.  A real one would be even better but this one does the job.  Just make sure your cannon match the plans!

It is looking nice, Augie.  Real nice!

Basements are a very strange characteristic and are, indeed, highly dependent on region.  In New England, it is almost unheard of for a home to be built on a slab.  In Florida, slabs and pilings with a crawlspace seem to be the norm.  Part of that relates to water table (not sea level) and part to environment.  In Maine, for example, you need to place a footing below the frost line - some 4 to 7 feet.  Once you dig that deep, going a bit further and putting in a basement is minor additional work.  Arkansas, even with a large tornado risk, doesn't do basements.  In the Delta part of the state it makes sense - the water table is only inches below the surface.  In the Ozarks, though, they still avoid basements and build on pilings with a crawlspace.

Would make an interesting sociological study someday!

Meantime, love the look so far, and look forward to the next stage of this build!

The lintels for the gun ports on the main gun deck have been completed.  I used 3/8" spacers to set the height.  And our paper cannon has returned :)

Will be moving on now to the sills and lintels for the ports on the quarter deck.

GREAT SCOTT!  You spotted that from 4,000 miles away!!! :D  :D

Rest easy mate.  The isopropyl has already been brought into play, the offending member removed/banished and a new piece of timber is ready for deployment!

Thanks John.

Be careful with those paper cannons. You can get expelled from school for having one of those! The lintels look great, but I see a discrepancy in the photo as well where John pointed to. Sometimes it's just the camera angle...

I'm feeling rather torn at the moment. Everytime I see photos of a Confed being build, I have a tremendous urge to start building mine the minute I get home..... but when I do eventually get there, I look at my Pegasus and reality sets in that I'm not finished her yet.... and I'm not letting myself give in until I get her done first.....

In the mean time I keep looking at these tempting photos and ...well......

These Dremel tables certainly get around.  Keep them under lock and key!!!!

Is Australia really that far?  I'll bet that doesn't even count the one mile + downhill :)

Continued patience, Andy.  You're Peggy is not to be rushed.  Your beautiful rigging makes me feel like a cat in a yarn store.

The carpenter is back on duty and all is well with the world.  Photos when the quarter deck work is done and my embarrassment subsides

Absolutely Jim.  Not only that, during my latest rework, I discovered that the pencil sander is THE ticket for sanding these sills and lintels into shape.  I love this thing so much I've taken to using it instead of the electric toothbrush.  Suggest you use 240 grit there as 180 makes teeth disappear.

Time for a small update.

The quarter deck sills and lintels are now completed.  After straightening out the 'glitch' from the last session (Igor ------ more isopropanol!!!), I used  3/4" spacers to set the sills.  This worked quite well:

post-56-0-85092400-1381773813_thumb.jpg

Once that was completed, I added the top rail which defines the height of the gunports .  These will be 6 pounders and required a 5/16" spacer and some sanding/beveling of the upper tips of the bulkhead 'horns'.

post-56-0-41547200-1381774030_thumb.jpg

Did a little more fairing and removed the temporary protective timbers off the horns.

We will now be moving on to setting the uprights on all the gunports.  Chuck has provided a template for this (bless him).

Oh, we are 100 hours into the build

Very nice Augie, everything looks perfect from what I can tell.

Now now Andy, I can't remember how long it took me but now I can't get 5 minutes modeling time on anything.

I am wondering if he includes all the time he spends just looking at it

I know that would add a zero or two to my build time
