Augie, as mentioned before I have the Confederacy waiting, and I enjoying every little bit of your build log.

Question: Do you think it would be possible to plank the deck with thicker strips and no false deck; type Bluenose? Just curious.

Almost anything is possible, Dr. Per !!  The decking strips supplied in the kit are 1/16" thick and the false deck is 1/32" so you would obviously need 3/32" thick planks.  However, as you have the kit right there, you will see that the false deck includes deadly accurate laser engravings for positioning the hatches, masts etc.  It also provides a nice solid base to lay your planks over.  When I did Chuck's Syren, there was no false deck and that worked out fine.  But to be honest, laying the Confed planks on top of the false deck just went a lot easier.  So, IMHO yes, it's possible ---- but I wouldn't do it myself.

Can't wait to see your rendition of Confed.  She's a fun project.

Just got caught up on your log Augie...whew, I have been gone a long time. I still say your work is exquisite, and breathtaking. I can only hope to be half as good as you in my own building.

BTW, I was in Denver last weekend, and plan to return in 4-6 weeks, do you know of places to visit to see models?

Maritime museums are not really big out here, Robbyn.  Unless you like Prairie Schooners  :) .  But if you contact DSiemens here on MSW, he's a member of Rocky Mountain Shipwrights and he might have some suggestions for you

Gun Preparation

Each gun port on the gundeck requires 4 eyebolts to secure the gun tackles and breech lines.  The holes were drilled and the upper eyebolts fitted.  The lower eyebolts will go in with the breech lines:

post-56-0-24539000-1414862155_thumb.jpg

As a review, I'll be using Chuck's brass canon from the Syren Co. in place of the kit-supplied white metal canon:

post-56-0-21463700-1414862253_thumb.jpg

You can see a small bit of flashing in the trunion hole in the uppermost canon.  For this purpose, keep a 1/16" drill bit handy for (gentle) easy removal by hand (12 pounders) .  In the case of the smaller 6 pounders, a #67 bit will suffice.  Also, keep a small sanding stick ready to smooth the ends of the trunions.  I cleaned the guns by soaking in acetone before fitting the trunions.

Here's what the guns look like with the trunions installed:

post-56-0-03464400-1414862484_thumb.jpg

Although one could choose to solder in the trunions, I chose to simply use the smallest dab of thick CA for this purpose.  It gives you time to work .

The next step will be fitting the brass rings for the breech lines to the guns.

Augie, those are some nice looking cannons! I wish Chuck was offering hem back when I bought mine. I would have paid half the price I think.

I dont envy you putting all those rings etc together. I only have 14 to do and find after stropping 2 or 3 blocks I am done for a while.

Looking forward to your next update.

Great guns, Augie.  Obviously well worth the time and investment.  Will you be blackening or painting the barrels?

No 20 coats on the cannons Augie!!

I pickled them in vinegar! If you use CA for the trunnions DO NOT pickle in Acetone, it is a CA debonder, as I found out.

As for paint, I used tamyia primer in the spray can which gave a great even and light coat without hiding details, then as recommended by some scratch builders I tried the black automotive flat black from Testors and was very happy how they came out.

At 700 HRS. into the build, it's time to finish off the cannon barrels.  We'll be using 1/16" eyebolts with just a short length of the base left to insert into the gun:

post-56-0-80476300-1415137787_thumb.jpg

The hole was drilled with a #76 pin drill at an angle so that the ring sits hard to the small knob.  A very small dab of thin CA was applied prior to insertion.  Here's the 32 gun cannon 'forest' ready for painting:

Now ready for painting.......see you in 2 weeks!!!
