Sea of Galilee Boat by Knocklouder - FINISHED - SE Miller - 1/20 scale

Recommended Posts

received_611430103865580.jpeg.c313fc0f0361d4d8245a245b9476f5b7.jpegToday I feel compelled to start this boat. Last year while shopping around for more models to buy, I came across this boat. I found a log for it here at MSW  and got the address for the boat. It was at Scott Miller Guitars  http://www.semillerguitars.com/sea-of-galilee-boats/. I got in contact with Scott,  and he explained what type of boat it was, it's called a strong back.  He also told me what type of wood was used . He explained how much time goes into one of these kits and asked if I was I sure It was the kind of model I was looking for.  We agreed on a deal and I bought one. So a year later  lol, I emailed  him and told him I was indeed going to build it. I don't know why I need to start this log today maybe because it is Easter Sunday.

I opened the kit and placed it in a box that was more accessible to get the parts.  The wood looks excellent,  everything is labeled  and packaged neatly.

There are some really great logs of this boat here on MSW, some with lots of research and historical information  if you care to look.

I just need to build a boat,  lol. So for the next couple of weeks  I will be getting  things organized for the build. I will add more info about the way I will build this model and hope it looks as good as the ones I have seen here. Follow at your own risk, there will be plenty of typos, and a whole lot of laughter and fun and I am allowed to use lots of CA glue for this model lol . Happy  Easter everyone  I am having a great one . Thanks so much

Bob M.

Thanks, @LyleK1 if by access you mean send everyone to your log for all the historcal and research  data, yes I will go for that. What could I add that is not  already there. Plus they will see your boat and read your log,  it's fantastic.  One that I will visit often.  Thanks so much for posting it.

I am going to dedicate  this boat to my First Mate,  love of my life. She helps so much with the builds, editing,  sail making , sewing and did I mention editing  lol20230410_105106.thumb.jpg.e1489f44a873114ebface6fb85a944ad.jpg

Well my son helped me put the disk in and make a pDF or what ever lol. And started looking at it and the next thing you know , ready for planking lol

Everything was so clearly marked on the strongback and it was easy to assemble.  I put tape on the strongback to hopefully  stop it from sticking when I go to remove the boat from it.

I am going to let everything dry up really  well before planking. Plus life's little detour  will slow me down for a couple of weeks ,but after that I will have or make more time for the ship yard.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well under way, mate! God to see another of these being built.

I love the ancient and mediaeval ships, particularly the unusual ones - something that isn't a Viking longship or the Santa Maria.

I'll pull up a pew and get the popcorn under way.

Well my friends, it's a sunny Manitoba morning, and the snow is turning into  water.  Time to build a boat lol.

This is a wonderful  kit that Scott Miller has made. The grain of the wood shows so nice, I hope the picture does it justice.

I have organized all the parts and put them on the peg board, leaving very little left in a smaller container. 20230415_194719.thumb.jpg.c5077c33d14f3e7a7488b8250054a13c.jpg20230420_132236.thumb.jpg.c1894b76ceb96853c541e0b6b1cff84a.jpgSo now Captain Marvin says it's time to plank this boat.20230415_200356.thumb.jpg.61ca34f0cad5d320bff359d767e92255.jpgThe first thing I noticed was, I was going to need a bigger plank bender. The second was, I was going to need more clamp.20230420_111631.thumb.jpg.e266fb57f5dad1024eaf53a54a1adea5.jpgSo we got some more clamps lol. I even glued some sand paper on the ends of a few clamps for a better grip ,no slipping needed. lol  After that, it's been clear sailing. The planks are going on really well and the more I put on, the better it is looking. So this is where I am at now...plank four of 15 on each side. The first 4 or 5 planks go on with just a little bending,  but now I will have to bend, twist, and bevel some edges.

A trip to the dentist,  for an extraction and a filling has slowed me up for the next couple of days, but I am in no rush. I really like this boat , it's all wood except  the anchor ,sails, and rigging.

So far it's going great, I have a little  bit of a discrepancy  on the stern, but will be able to fix that when the time comes. LOL

A few more pictures of how I am building this boat with the last picture of my boat as she stands now.

I would like to thank everyone for their help and comments,  for those who are following along, thank you. It means a lot. A special  thank you to the NRG and MSW,  for helping me out when I needed it. It means lot as well.

So in a few days, we will see where I am at. Oh yes, the super D cup is my new swear jar  and yes there are some coins in it lol.  Hopefully I won't fill it lol.  Having a great time, and @Louie da fly, get lots of popcorn because after this boat, it will be La Nina then a Viking Long boat(sorry for another one lol) so I will be here on the pages of 1500 or less for awhile longer lol .

Stay safe my friends and model on.

I'm late to the show but working my way to the front row.  Looks like an interesting subject and I love the prominent wood grain.  But the best part is the dedication of the build.  Toast to your First Mate!!!

Looking good!

Now the fun begins. Take your time with the next few planks... it progressively gets tougher to bend and twist them. The better the joint, the less sanding later!

There are spots on my build that were mighty thin!

Have fun!

Yesterday I got to plank eight on both sides. And yes I have a few more coins in the super D cup. Don't you just hate it when you sand ,carve, shape a plank get it all ready to glue in and bang it breaks lol. One more coin for the cup lol. So far I have broken 6 planks, but will be ble to use them soon as the planks are getting  shorter .

The grain of the  wood shows up so nice. I really like this kit, the wood is right on..

So I will post again when I put four more planks on each side.

So planking continues, or should I say clamping continues LOL. I noticed one thing,  that is once you fit and shape the plank and it's all ready for glue, you apply the glue and for some reason all bets are off lol. It slides , wiggles, moves and you need every bit of space for another clamp.  I even had to go to an even bigger plank bender,  I starting using my heat gun. I added the bend, placed it and held the heat gun on the  the bend point till it bent to the right spot.  Yes I broke more than I wanted too lol.😜20230430_095444.thumb.jpg.4ee2c69e758d8d548a63fe2f46d1e390.jpg20230430_095447.thumb.jpg.54efa035468de94d68f0e2e671a05d04.jpg20230502_160550.thumb.jpg.99f977bb9d159c455f29043194fd7278.jpgClamping  continues  all the way to the keel . Yes I had to do a small change as the last 3 planks weren't going to go as planed

. I think I got to much of a bend, they just kept snapping .so the last 3 planks I started  at the keel and fitted  them on. I know, but it's at the bottom and no one will see it, and I plan to put a floor in it. That is if it survives pulling it of the strong back.

So we will see what happens.  I have no tappered  planks left any way lol. But I do have lots of broking pieces to make the floor if it servies  the  removal process  🤔,  lol. We will see what happens next.

Up to this point the kit has been a lot of fun. A big thanks to Scott Miller,  for such a wonderful kit,  the wood is awesome.  And to everyone who looks and likes , thanks so much.

That's got to be the widest variety of clamps used on a boat at the same time!  Despite all the difficulties you described, your planking came out beautiful.  That next to last picture is fabulous!

I also notice that Marvin disappeared from the last few pictures.  Did you scare him away with all that language that's been filling up the super D cup?  😃

It took a little finessing to get mine off the strong back but ultimately, it did come off without any damage!

Hope yours does too.

Well I suppose you are all wondering if it made it off the strong back, lol. Not once ,not twice, but thrice did I whack the strong back with my hammer. Lol The third time I hit it,  it was do or die , I used the power of Thor's hammer, all I heard was wood splitting , what have I done!!! Lol I tried working it off, even sprayed water on the tapes in hopes that it would loosen up ,but no luck. So I wrapped my fingers onto the stern, and whacked it, on the strong back, this is what happened. 20230505_213148.thumb.jpg.4995f1379da8026b6d22e2dd0556c0f3.jpg20230507_101749.thumb.jpg.e13c61062197dc0dc406140cda8c2d38.jpg20230507_095304.thumb.jpg.a6114924e148d6035902fc18dfa02989.jpg6 of the nine bulk heads came unglued, but only one broke and I glued it all back together,  just in case I ever want to make another one lol.20230505_211900.thumb.jpg.5e3a846610575c29eb47de180962d703.jpgAnd this is what it looked like on the inside before I sanded it and clean it up. Then I guickly  put it on the stand.20230505_211839.thumb.jpg.9cce336fca2cd6ff77bd885c572c504b.jpgSo , I cleaned it up, then coated the inside with CA. Then I sprayed shellac sealer on the outside, just a quick coat of clear.  I will be using my own crystal amber shellac; never made my own but have used lots of pre mix in my day.20230506_083400.thumb.jpg.bd20ba98dafc0a525d3d9615a4be8aea.jpg20230506_083634.thumb.jpg.94e2a3f4db1a251839530d9dbc5ae33b.jpg20230506_105032.thumb.jpg.3e12052a7598267f395d243bdd46fe68.jpg20230506_105152.thumb.jpg.5ebce10bb9ad88fca73613db1e6eaf21.jpgSo now it is on to the ribs.  I set up my little  plank bender and tried bending a few. They bend really well and in no time I had a few done

So this is where the boat is at now.

This has been a real challenge and I loved every minute of it. You can see how it is done on any of the logs for the sea of Galilee boat, but there's nothing like doing it yourself.

I could not have done this to this point without learning how to do it right here from MSW. Thank you so much everyone.

When I built my dromon on a solid wooden plug, I covered the plug in cling-wrap and it came off with (relatively) little trouble (see

If you ever do another strongback model, you might consider covering each bulkhead with cling-wrap as a "resist" rather than tape. I dunno. The techniques are different, and the clingwrap might interfere with planking.

But she's looking very good. Did you find she squoze (past tense of squeeze) inwards due to the springiness of the planking when you removed her from the strongback? Or did she retain her shape?

@Louie da fly, you are so right about covering the strong back with cling wrap. I just found out that CA does not want to stick to it. A note to everyone building this boat in the future.. use cling wrap. I used it under my rubber bands on this boat and it never stuck. Wished I had of known that trick, but will mark that one down in my log. Also, the boat retained it's shape when I took it off.  I just put a piece of planking, because that is what Scott Miller said to do, lol. More on CA, I found out if you put Vaseline on the cap of the bottle you don't need pliers to take the cap off later.20230509_163403.thumb.jpg.ddc126b6ed516d188926c98e633d0e38.jpgThe First Mate has joined the fun. She loves the way it looks with clear shellac lol,  so we will see if we go with amber shellac now. But she did make the fishing net, and the basket  🧺. We traced a quarter on a peice of wood, figured out how to devide the circle in 11 equal  parts then we drilled holes for the nails and she went to town. It looks great!!20230509_150359.thumb.jpg.7d2e7ee866fbddbb1979dfabb1833cdb.jpg20230509_150040.thumb.jpg.62970cef8edccab869bffbf6b67837c7.jpg20230509_154330.thumb.jpg.1544f812c8c94badbf43de921217bf02.jpgSo I decided to make all the ribs that touch the keel first, then I will do the shorter ones..then fill in the rest. So work continues....

Great basket, mate!

And in return for my tip on the cling-wrap you gave me one on how to keep the CA cap from sticking to the tube. So Thanks for that. It would never have occurred to me.
