Keith , having spent the last hour and a half starting at the beginning, it looks like a marvelous project. I will most certainly be following along and gleaning tips from your ingenious problem solving skills.  The comment about the breakfast counter made me laugh. It looks like you will have some fun with the bright-work and all those panels.

Hello friends. Just touching base to confirm that I am still in the world of the living. Sorry about the absence. Lots of family duties got in the way of ship building and the workshop has been collecting cobwebs for most of the summer. The geriatric members of the family (my age) seem to have accumulated various degrees of serious illness necessitating ongoing visits. Meanwhile my son and daughters house moves respectively have provided a string of opportunities from simple decorating up to patio construction and garden re-modelling. Grandparental duties are also likely to be in sharp focus for a number of months - grandchild number 2 (boy) arrives next Friday. In my day the sex and the arrival time were a mystery but it seems that in our modern word all uncertainties have been removed 🤞. I hope to get back onto a bit of modelling in the autumn as the weather deteriorates. In the mean time I will try to catch up with all your build logs. Best wishes.

Welcome back!  As they say, age is just a number, but as the numbers creep up visits to the Doctor become more numerous and allow us to keep modeling.

 

Congratulations on your new grandson.  Here in the US, “gender reveal” parties are in vogue; some quite elaborate.  Fortunately, my wife and I have avoided having to attend one of these.

Amazing, but it strikes mw that with the modern trends towards  "self identification" that it will take many years before parents will know for certain! Or perhaps they just delay the parties for later in life?

Very timely.  A good friend of ours just called upset that her 6 year old granddaughter has announced that the wants to be a boy.  Her mother, our friend’s daughter, is apparently encouraging her.  What a mess!

Seems that people now can have several 'gender reveal' parties ... everything is in flux ...

 

The German government just put in a new legislation that allows you to change your name once a year (if I understood correctly) - this is the end of genealogy. It was already a mess, when men were allowed to take the wife's family some 40 years ago.

 

I think the (western) world lost its compass and bearings.

When researching my British-Canadian wife's family history (English, Scottish and Irish) we found documents referring to her Japanese father-in-law's (Keijiro Yamada from an earlier marriage) father as Chojiro Sato (yo-shi). We had no idea what "yo-shi" meant. I eventually learned that it meant that the man had taken his wife's maiden name because there were no male descendants in the wife's family. So to preserve the family name the husband assumes the bride's family name. His wife's name was Tsui Yamada. Their children all had the Yamada surname, as do all the descendants, including my step-sons and my grandchildren.

 

So Japan has this "official" procedure for changing the family surname. We learned of this through the Heart Mountain internment camp records from WWII.

 

If you think European genealogy can be tricky, just think what a mess American genealogy can be!

Off-topic, but still with maritime relevance: my father's family comes from northern Germany and while researching the family tree, we stumbled onto two serious obstacles:

 

- In Prussia a mariage license was 20 Goldmark, a significant sum for a poor sailor (as many of my ancestors evidently were), so they started a family, saving up for the time, when this could be legalised; however, it seems that my biological great-great-great-grandfather was lost at sea and his son was therefore registered under his mother's maiden name; she subsequently married another man, who adopted this child. In addition, many church records have been lost in the aftermath of WW2.

 

- In Eastern Frisia church records are quite complete, but there the old Germanic tradition persisted until around 1870 to not have family names per se, but to denote a son by adding -son to his fathers first name. Plus the range of first names was quite limited, so that we have church-books full of Xxxxsons, but we don't know who is who.

On 13 May I commented "i can start generating the hull transverse sections corresponding to the frames on Cangarda". Somehow we are now at the the last day of August and I have just completed the task. My productivity is sadly lacking,

Cangarda has frames on a 18" pitch or 3/4" at model scale. The pitch is a bit over the top for model purposes so I plan to make every 2nd frame giving a frame spacing of 1.5".

I have kept the numbering as per the plans supplied by Tr1-Costal Marine so every second section is missing. I took a lot of care with plotting (using the pencil, dividers and french curve method). I then spent some time reviewing the nested section to identify and obvious glitches. 

Generally the nested lines seem to have turned out reasonably well.

I have included all the drawings as PDF files  in the event that others want to have a go at building Cangarda.

Given the many hours you have invested this is a most generous gift. I do like your excellent hand drawn plans. I have spent some of the summer learning a simple CAD programme, and I do miss the drafting which gives so much more insight.

Keith - Not yet - apparently he is last on the list for today. If they run out of time he will be bumped to tomorrow. They are a bit short of staff today - his mother is one of the doctors on the delivery team and she isn't planning a DIY job.
