HMS Agamemnon by Sjors - FINISHED - Caldercraft/Jotika - 1:64

Recommended Posts

Great advice and demo from Theo!  Now, if I had a mini sheet metal bending brake that would be my first choice.  As an old 'tin packer" (sheet metal mechanic / aircraft mechanic)  we never, ever scribe any sheet metal.  We only use a 3B pencil.

However, for our purpose this'll work great if it's only one bend.  For all the tiny parts I had to make for the O19 a brake would not have worked anyhow so my thoughts are directed towards doing the bending with my crude method  ;)

Sjors, if you have a brake use it, you'll like it.

Cheers,

Piet, The Flying Dutchman.

Catching up on your build Sjors.  Fantastic job on the coppering.  As far as putting the plates on vertically on the rudder post it will hardly show when the rudder is attached, so it shouldn't matter.  On the actual rudder for my Victory I wrapped the plates horizontally around the aft end of the rudder, wasn't too difficult.  Keep up the great work.

Thanks Patrick,

I will try that when I put the copperplates on the rudder.

And I see that you paint the pintles copper ?( pintles is a right word for it ? )

May I ask why ?

Hi Sjors.

The pintles and gudgeons (rudder hinges) were made of bronze on the actual ship, but can hardly be seen on the model as they're covered by the rudder straps.  The rudder straps and bolts were made of copper or a copper alloy.  When they originally began coppering ships' hulls they used iron straps and quickly found that the iron would corrode and rust very quickly due to the galvanic reaction between copper and iron immersed in sea water, so they stopped using any iron fittings below the waterline.

And if that explanation is too scientific, I painted the rudder straps copper because it said to do so in the instruction manual!

Cheers,

Patrick

Little update today.

I have placed the transom.....

It was a little tricky because between the planking and the transom bottom there has 3 planks to go with a little curve.

They where to long so I thought I made a mistake.

So right away I send Mobbsie a whats app to see what's going on.

And I make no mistake.

They are longer then necessary so you can trim it the right size :D  :D

I have to send it a little more and give it a touch up with the paint.

Painting in the evening is never a good idea !!!!!!

That's it for today

Have a lovely sunday.

After 4 day's of trying to get the copperplates right on the rudder , it is done.

It was a lot of re-do but that's part of something I never done before.

Because I want to make a brick pattern on it and I ended with small pieces.

Lot of cutting and saying bad words when it was not right.....

I'm not fitting the rudder at this time because I have to figure out how the pintles are coming.

So the rudder goes into the complete box till I think that it is time to place it.

Looks nice Sjors.  No rush on attaching it ---- I knocked mine off twice before I put it back in the 'completed box'.

Say, did you see the photo on Mobbsie's Aggy log with him standing in front of the completed ship in case?  You just may wish to start house hunting about now.

Nice work on the rudder and good for you on putting it away for now.   I think you learned a good thing there on re-doing.
