San Francisco 2 by Shaz - FINISHED - Artesania Latina - Wood

Recommended Posts

Hi Robbyn,

If it's PVA glue you're trying to de-bond, then using some isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) will help things along.

If you used CA (bad girl!), then acetone (nail polish remover) will do the job.

I am big on the suggestion of  "the next one".   I hardly ever change anything drastic........for fear that it might distort the wood or something.  for first time modelers......I tend to suggest finishing the model the way it is.    then,  after doing a few more builds,  look at the first one they did.   this is a good barometer,  for showing you,  how much you have learned.   this cut out the agravation for the modeler,  and prevents wanting to give up.   I do apologize,   but I find it sad to see folks back tracking on their builds.   since you have chosen to correct it........I hope your redo works well for you.

I would have left well enough alone, but I had nothing to attach the upper shroud deadeyes too. Instructions failed to mention needing to drill holes in my crow's nests first. I attempted drilling the holes with them in place, but even though the metal is soft, I could not get it done without causing breakage to the masts. So, in order to drill the holes properly I need to remove the crows nests. Problem...that means the lower shrouds have to come down as they run through the nests.

It is not the end of the world, I bought better rope, ordered a serving machine...so I believe that will make doing the shrouds easier this time, and I enjoy the rat lines anyway. It is only setting me back about 3 weeks....oh well, the longboat is keeping me busy in the meantime :D

Grant, thanks for the reminder about the alcohol, it worked like a charm. now just need my serving machine and I am ready to get busy again!

Funny thing about the rat lines, I don't find them mind numbing at all...maybe it is the intricate needlework, but I find them stimulating and enjoyable, what can I say...everyone here is nuts anyway for doing this hobby lol

Hi Robbyn,

Glad to hear that the alcohol worked.  Presumably you remembered to apply some to the parts as well as to yourself :P :P :P

Although, reading what you said about ratlines, we could all be forgiven for thinking otherwise..............

Anyway, good on you for taking this bold step - I'm sure you will be well satisfied once the re-do is complete.

Robynn, my hat is off to you for taking on this re-work on your model. I know that would have been the kiss of death for me and the model would been assigned a berth on wreckers row. You have inspired me to have a look at some of my unfinished models and see if there are any that can be salvaged.

But then you casually say you enjoy ratlines... I have no reply to that. :)

Talk about the right stuff! go Robynn go.

Ok, a picture for Sjors as this is the only progress I have made on the SF all week.

as you can see, the masts are taken apart, and all the deadeye jigs are ready and waiting.

Update on the serving machine, it is in the US, has been for 4 days, so hopefully it will be here by the weekend. I might even have some time to build come Sunday

My, you have been busy... all that and still managed to breathe and eat?  Wow! :)

Cool serviing machine.  BTW, remind me again...who's serving machine did you buy?  I don't feel like digging back x-number of pages.  Been a long week last week and this week is shaping up the same way.

Mark, Michael Mott built the serving machine for me. I think he felt really sorry for me when I went and bought all the stuff Andy told me to buy so I could create one like his, but when I got home, the gears I had would not work. Michael had showed me his and I jokingly said I would buy it from him. We struck a deal, and he built me a new one. :D Michael says, it was great fun, and he made improvements based of Alexis (with his permission) to both mine and his own, but swears he would never do it again!!! I think it is much like model building, finish one, and you never have the desire to do the same build a second time.

Robbyn,

Check your local hardware or hobby store.  They make a chuck for the Dremel which takes bits down to almost hair size.   It thinks part of the flex-shaft option and also sold separately.

my son got me the Dremel 100 for Christmas.  included in the box, was a sheet showing most {if not all} of the attachments for it.  they do show a couple of different chucks for it:

#EZ402  EZ lock........probably will work on most attachment shafts

#4486    looks like the standard chuck

#4485   has the chuck with four different core grips.    this is worth looking at is solving your problem.   I see other attachments that might do the trick.......even drill bits that are mitered to fit the average chuck.

Yeah... And don't go for cheap knock offs either... Found a cheap-o one at the local hobby shop once... The cut of the collet was just off centre enough that when I used it for the first time, the weight of a #75 bit made the whole rig bend 90 degrees... Made the dremel do all sorts of weird things...

Welcome home Robbyn! Hope you enjoyed your break by the lake, even if you did have to follow it up with house repairs/rennos. There is an attachment for the Dremel that replaces the collets with a micro-chuck that should solve the problem. Alternatively, you can buy drill bits that have a thicker shaft to mount in your existing collets.
