I think this is a great idea. I find the typical large, folded sheets of plans difficult to use and they are often completely cluttered with sub-assemblies also making them difficult to read. Smaller, spiral bound booklets are a welcome change. The Vanguard instruction booklets and small size sheets of plans by Chris Watton for his models are fantastic.

I know exactly how you feel and I think it's a perfectly fine idea to take a break from the Syren until you feel the pull to get back to it again. I've been away from my Pen Duick build for a couple of months now for a variety of reasons. Mostly because my perfectionism was getting in the way of me enjoying the process. So I stepped away for a while and started playing my guitar again. I'd been so focused on modeling that I'd forgotten just how much I love playing my guitar. It's been great and I'm really getting into fingerstyle Brazilian music. I always loved Bossa Nova and Samba but found the rhythms complicated and the complex chord shapes technically very difficult. I've been playing a lot lately and I'm really pleased with my progress. My muscle memory for the difficult chord shapes is coming around and I'm having fun. I was looking at my Pen Duick today and I'm about ready to get going on it again. The time away from modeling has been good for me. I feel like I'll be refreshed when I start working on her again. Good luck on whatever comes next for you, Justin.

Beautiful Rusty! What gold paint are using? Are you hand brushing or spraying?

Well that's a bummer, David, you really put a good effort into trying to build this model. I too have a model that I finally needed to put aside because it had become more frustrating than fun and I felt like I was just stumbling blindly along. At my age, life is much too short to spend hours on anything that has ceased to be satisfying. I look forward to seeing what your next build will be.

I'm looking forward to following along on your build, Rob. My second build was the Maristella Batelina and I enjoyed it very much. I really like of the line of models offered by MarisStella and the shipment from Croatia and communication with Zoran was excellent. I decided to build the Stilac after the Batelina but got completely bogged down and confused at a similar point just a little further along than you are currently on your build of the Stefano. Although the instructions had numerous computer generated illustrations, they didn't prove to be that helpful for me. So I put the model on the shelf and decided I'd come back to it once I felt I was experienced enough to try and figure things out. Of course, my inexperience at the time may have had a lot to do with it. I will be following your build closely. It's a beautiful looking model. Good luck!

About the NRG
If you enjoy building ship models that are historically accurate as well as beautiful, then The Nautical Research Guild (NRG) is just right for you.
The Guild is a non-profit educational organization whose mission is to “Advance Ship Modeling Through Research”. We provide support to our members in their efforts to raise the quality of their model ships.
The Nautical Research Guild has published our world-renowned quarterly magazine, The Nautical Research Journal, since 1955. The pages of the Journal are full of articles by accomplished ship modelers who show you how they create those exquisite details on their models, and by maritime historians who show you the correct details to build. The Journal is available in both print and digital editions. Go to the NRG web site (www.thenrg.org) to download a complimentary digital copy of the Journal. The NRG also publishes plan sets, books and compilations of back issues of the Journal and the former Ships in Scale and Model Ship Builder magazines.
