  1. I quite agree with that also. This might be why some builders have multiple projects going on at once.
  2. Welcome to MSW. Looking forward to your log. I take it from your screen name, you're a former Marine?
  3. AL is back as Jack points out and I understand that they are shipping models.
  4. I think many of us have a "building ghost" running around, Sjors. I'm happy to hear you got it sorted.
  5. Not going to like that post, Rick. I'm just glad you can still visit us and work on the Mayflower.
  6. Welcome to MSW, Pariahking. You might have a look at this topic as it has a lot of useful information. Also, have a look here: https://thenrg.org/resource/articles as there's good articles on what to expect, tools to get you started and also don't ever buy, etc.
  7. Hi Bruce, welcome to MSW from south of you. There are some scratch builds of steam powered models but not that many. You might do a search there. I'm assuming, of course, that you actually want steam power and be able to put in a pond.
  8. If it's any consolation, the rice bags do really bring the boat to life.
  9. One thing you can do for that warpage is use a piece of wood such that it's glued to both bulkeads and the keel instead what you're thinking of doing. All that will do is keep the bulkheads square but still allow the keel to warp. Another way, is find a straight, flat piece of plywood the same thickness and cut a new false keel.
  10. On top of that, there's no one can ever say that is wrong. Looks good to me and your explanations sound spot on.
  11. I had a feeling that you're right, Bob. But I thought I'd ask anyway.
  12. The pin rail itself is on the "outside" opposite the mast. Those are nice renderings.
  13. And on the unseen side of things.. many of those who read this won't be dealing with them either.
  14. Sjors, it's great to see you back and building. I'll follow along also.
  15. The Union had given thought armoring the upper areas after the battle at Fort Donaldson. There, the cannons were up high and shooting down at the boats. The Union was cranking out gun boats pretty fast, all things considered, and some of them never were upgraded due to the pressures of war while the South built some ironclads, they converted far more to wood clads and cotton clads.
  16. That's good that you're relatively unscathed by the heart attack and you had a great package waiting for you.
  17. From here, and not knowing which ship or nationality, it appears the part in question is the belaying pin rack at the base of the main mast.
  18. John, I'm curious. Did you try the "reconstituted" paint?
  19. Congrats on the retirement, Jeff.
  20. In defense, it seems all of ANCRE's books are expensive but they are well done and on quality paper. Money exchange rates and shipping, and in some places VAT on top of the price makes them even more expensive. Having said that... I personally find them worth the money (I have 5 or 6 monographs) which I probably won't live long enough to build the models. Oh well....
  21. Not going to like that post, OC. Naturally other then slamming you for technique, they ignored the compatibility issue.
