HMS Warspite by Old Collingwood - FINISHED - Academy - 1/350 scale - PLASTIC

Apparently she didn't like going anywhere when not under her own power. She also broke all of her tow lines when going through the Straights of Messina on the way to Malta for repairs. She ended up going through on her own, sideways, before they could hook her up again.

Very interesting ship and makes building her even more correct for me is having once visited her last resting place (well scrapping place)

one type of bomb that was radio controlled, and another that was fly by wire

Hi CDW

I'm a little worried about yet again getting someone upset about leading a build log astray so I will try and shorten this as much as possible.

The only reference I can find for wire guided German bombs is a prototype design called the Siemens Torpedo Glider in WW1 and a very late version of the HS 2893 that was television aimed and wire guided but never reached operational level. Interesting stuff, at least to me.

I can delete this stuff if you want OC.

I, for one, don't object to this as it gives context to the ship and her history.

No its fine lou,  its all relevant regarding the bombs that attacked ships including the ole girl,  I reserched it to find out what repairs would have been noticable on my build at DDay,  I have narrowed it down to - a possible patch on the boat deck next to the funnel,  a patch under the bottom of the hull (these two were the entrance and exit holes)  and also a comcrete casemant that was attached to the inside starboard hull, but this had a fresh section of torpedo bulge added over the top.

Thanks OC

I guess I do get a little carried away at times about the history of the ships we build. That is what attracted me to model ships at a young age and still does. I have been an avid reader of 18th and 19th century navel history for almost 60 years now and don't really know how to stop. Like Mark says, I also think it brings context to the build.

It does indeed lou,  I value your research and anything you can throw into the mix and help me with my build - is invaluable,  the same goes for all my other friends on here, imput and  bits and pieces of info make this site what it is and brings me to the site everyday.

The Germans did have wire-guided versions of the Fritz X bombs to counter the jamming techniques employed by the Allies on their radio controlled bombs.

You can read a brief mention of it here: http://warfarehistorynetwork.com/daily/wwii/the-azimuth-smart-bombs-of-world-war-ii/

Thanks CDW

Still not much but I was also able to find this: https://www.nationalmuseum.af.mil/Visit/Museum-Exhibits/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/196228/german-fritz-x-guided-bomb/

The source is trust able I think but I wish there was more than just a comment about the wire guided reference. But it does indicate that the wire guided versions were actually deployed even though without indication of when or where.

I do stand corrected though. Thanks

Lou

Quite a bit of work done today, I carried on working in the hanger bay - I decided to populate it with a couple of boxes, and also fitted a walkway,  after the glue had set I applied a bit of paint,   then it was time to fit the open hanger section to the other side,  at the same time I trimmed part of the roller door down, and fitted it, then I dry fitted it to the lower frame.

I then dry fitted both on the deck to see how it looks.

Here are a few pics.

I have also been working on the roof of the hanger that contains the boat deck, this is the area where the Fritz bomb hit near to the funnel, so I decided to fit a armour plate over the entry hole from the bomb,  also in the same area - both sides of the funnel are two vents that needed roof overhangs, these were constructed from thin card then placed and painted to correspond with the deck dark grey color.

Here are a few pics of this area plus a dry fit of it ontop of the hanger.

A bit more progress slightly late putting on as I had a few bits of laptop maintenance to do and only just came back online.

Here are a couple of pics showing the mid grey paintwork applied to the outside of the hanger block, and a slight touch up of the white including a pannel I fixed on the rear wall to hide that nasty sink mark visible through the rolloer shutter(the one higher up wont be seen when the boat deck is on.

As always sincere thanks for all the attention - followers and likes   It does make a difference.

By the way  - you may be wondering  Whats going inside the hanger?     "Well  you see"   -  its going to house one of the boats on a  trolly attached to a couple of tracks (like the the ones that would have supported her Walrus sea plane).

Another good day at the bench  (cant you just tell the weather is carp)    anyway it was time to fit the two ladders going down/up  to the first level that contains the two cranes,  these needed the cut outs in the deck widening,   then as before I cut the ladders one at a time from the pe fret  - then the same bending to shape.   I then applied a small amount of ca glue to the edge of the cut out and fitted the ladders, then after applying a bit more ca underneath  and when the ladder was secure I opened up the ladder steps.

This was repeated on the other side.

Just a few pictures a bit fuzzy but you can just make out the ladders.

Next off  was to work on the boat and trolly to go inside the hanger,   this was the same procedure as the boat on the deck near the radar stack,  first I made the trolly then glued it to the bottom of the boat, while this was setting I constructed a plate to act as a guide, this was shaped then glued to the hanger floor,   when the boat/trolly had set I was able to paint the boat mid grey and light buff,  the boat was then fixed onto the plate.

Here are a few pics showing the boat inside the hanger.

Evening all,   more time on the bench today  it was "itty bitty" day lots of tiny bits without moving very far,  I was carrying on with the hanger/boat deck attaching several small assemblies,  I also applied a few coats of paint.

Upsss  picked up a bit of dust in the last pic - must sort that out.

Not bad mate,  gently bent the sides then applied a small amount of ca  from a narrow pointed stck, then when fully set I used my sharp narrow scalpel to open the rungs up, I was scared at first but after doing two I feel more confident to tackle the rest of them - and there are quite a few to do.

I learned some special things with using lifecolor and handpainting -

1) Always keep the brushes cleaned with a jar of water to hand,

2) Keep the paint tubs/jars constantly agitated or stired,

3) Clean around the top of the tub/jar as dry paint often collects there,

4) Apply several thin coats and heat dry with a hairdryer to speed up applying each coat,

5) Apply a few very watery thinned down coats last - this tends to smooth out the paint layers.
